Last I knew, in 2016 so it may be different now, only women were given the HPV vaccine for free in the NHS in the UK, all the information about HPV was for women and all the resources available were for women. Nothing for men with the virus. Nothing for men who wanted protection against getting the virus.

The article starts out with fear mongering talking about someone that died of cancer. It then claims they are certain that HPV is a cause of cancer and that HPV is a seriously big problem for both genders. It then goes through some of the history of research done by the vaccine manufacturer Merck which found that they could not prove there was a link between HPV, vaccine, and pre-cancerous lesions in the throat. Finally they get to the "new evidence"

2009 and 2016 ... HPV strains ... declined 37% in unvaccinated men — those strains went from infecting 2.7% of unvaccinated men to 1.6% of unvaccinated men.

They then claim that they are certain that if more men were vaccinated the numbers would be better. The new evidence is that HPV is disappearing without the vaccine.

This change predated introduction of the national vaccination program. The incidence of high-grade squamous dysplasia has also fallen in young women, with the fall in rate beginning well before any plausible effect from the vaccination program, but with slight but significant increases in older age groups.

Not sure where you are, but my child's last required immunization (aside from boosters) is the HPV vaccine, later next year before he starts middle school. So there is hope.

I do wonder what portion of that percentage is in men who were too late for the vaccine to make a difference. HPV is also one of the most prolific 'STIs', and the most unnoticed. It has many, many strains, only a few of which have currently-known effects. Iirc, it's a couple strains for cancer and 7ish for genital warts.

HPV is a pretty tricky one in general...unless one develops warts, it can be unnoticed for years, even decades. Last I knew, aside from the wart strains that make themselves obvious, there also isn't a developed screening for boys/men - and it's usually only only detected in girls/women when a cancer strain shows up in a pap smear. Even then, they can have markers at one smear, and then it's gone dormant and undetectable at the next. It also is not prevented by condom use, which adds to it's squirrelly-ness. It's an odd duck, to be sure.
