It's an excellent way to measure how much he respects her.

Among masculine men who like and trust each other, guys can talk about anything, and they push each other's limits.

But if anyone's girlfriend, wife, sister or someone else feminine enough enters the room, then those guys who respect her, they will push for everyone to clean up their acts and their language. For her sake.

If they don't allow her to be there, then they're going to want to make her leave.

A funny anecdote that illustrates your problem. My boss was telling me last night that two friends of his were out in public somewhere and ran into a woman they knew. The three were conversing, during which the woman asked them point-blank who they were voting for. The men didn't want to say "Trump" at the risk of appearing unchivalrous, so they hemmed and hawed and said they hadn't decided yet. The woman promptly piped up, "Well, I hope you don't vote for crooked Hilary!" and launched into long tirade about the evils of HRC. The dudes were pretty amazed, LOL. :-)

I heard fairer sex, but not explicitly used at me.

And I get the swearing thing from older men. I usually get them to relax by mocking them when they do swear, because they can never contain it, so I joke about them swearing in front of a lady until they relax a bit and then it usually becomes a bit of a running gag.

I don't know, I generally don't swear in front of people older than me and people I don't know very well in general, but I do swear some with close people.

Should this sort of chivalry be encouraged? Is there a way to reassure men that I'm not going to be easily offended, especially at words not directed at myself?

IMHO, someone who acts as a "gentleman" is someone who is considering the feelings of others. I.E. an empathetic trait.

My take is to not interfere with that process if you happen to meet someone, man or woman ( though social convention puts the pressure on the man in most cases) who wants to extend to you "gentlemanly" behavior.

Personally, I don't like most people, I also don't agree with how most women behave around me. That being said, I make it a point and enjoy behaving as a gentleman ( opening doors, lifting heavy things, helping a woman with her heavy bags, offering her my seat, etc, etc)

To me, it's not just respect for the other person, it's also about showing respect for oneself. I simply feel it's beneath me to act in an undignified way around women, and this is removing how they behave around me. IMHO, how you choose to approach the world, outside of family and most work situations, is a complete choice.

I've observed that many people, esp women, respond extremely well to me in terms of my manners.

To me, the basis of any "love" comes from respect. I.E. you can't love someone if you can't respect them, and if they don't respect you, they don't love you. So respect for oneself is very critical in terms of people you want to be around in life.
