She’s gone into hiding. She’ll pop up saying she’s afraid for her safety because hate mail, death threats, etc., trying to build sympathy for herself. Since she couldn’t be the hero she thought she was, she’ll be the victim she knows she is.

This idicates to me that the police made contact with her, or some how validated that she is fine just does not want to talk to her family, which is her right.

The police will not tell the family her location or status if she does not want them do, they will validate she is fine and mark her as "voluntarily missing"

Now that is not to say the police did their jobs and actually did make contact, but rather are just sweeping it under the rug with no investigation, that is equally possible.
