I've seen tons of posts recently commenting on Cardi B's old interview where she states that when she worked as a stripper, she would drug and rob men. Many have commented that if she were a man, she could never get away with this. Considering all the violent crimes committed by male rappers, I think this highlights the higher standard people are holding Cardi to as a female rapper. Many of hip hops most revered artists have committed violent crimes, including Snoop Dogg, Gucci Mane, Tupac, and DMX. This past or present violent lifestyle gives these artists street cred, and is used to help fans empathize the hardships of inner city poverty and the choices they have to make to survive. Cardi B is no different. She's not proud of what she had to do, but she felt she had to do it at the time to get by. While her past transgressions shouldn't be excused, she should be treated the same as any male rapper who lived in similar conditions and made similar choices.
