Is the statement "check your privilege" hate speech?

I stand opposed to hate speech as a concept because it's so nebulous and primarily used against people disadvantaged by the social climate. That's the exact reason fighting words was weakened as a first amendment exclusion. I stand against defining hate speech outside of direct calls for violence that could be reasonably expected to be acted upon.

That being said, it's a slimy as hell silencing tactic that essentially says you aren't allowed to talk because of merit of how you were born. It's everything feminism CLAIMS to fight against. It's also an ad home attack. It's just shitty.

I don’t know about hate speech. I do know that, if a woman, minority or otherwise, had to live my life for a day, she would kill herself within the first half hour, just based solely on dirty looks from perfect strangers.

If your "privileged" you are a oppressor and can justly be hated. Think that is the thinking of those that embrace victim status.

Most of the phrases and hashtags are. It's a very simplified, overly-aggressive and non-productive way to communicate.

Even on Twitter I try to avoid them. We need to open up those filterbubbles, if we want to keep democracy alive.

I did a lot of research on this a few years back and basically it means that you become subservient to women. They actually use words like 'know your place'.

I wouldn't say hate speech. There are plenty examples of that in feminism without check your privelege being one of them.

It's a control tactic though. It's meant to imbalance and shut you up, to embarrass you and make you feel like you've crossed a line somehow. Similar to other accusations feminists throw out (women in particular), like:

I wouldn't trust you around my kids (typically in response to an opinion that is so over exaggerated it's no longer even close to what you said).

Or the old stand by, insulting your sex life, sexual organs or general luck with women.

All of the above are examples of trying to control the narrative, because no one here wants to be seen as a threat to anyone, let alone women. No one here wants to he seen as a threat to kids, and no one here actually wants to lord over a second class of citizenry - we believe in equality after all.

imho "check your privilege" is meant to be provocative and threatening in order to bar you from counter arguments or to shut you up in the following sense:

"check your privilege" ... or else

It also infers racial and gender bias as the person threatening you likely knows nothing about you other than your gender and skin colour.

I never say "check your privilege" except to a SJW. Other people don't know what it means and a lot get freaked out and consumed by defensiveness so no further communication is possible.

It isn't an attack. It is a suggestion that if your circumstances did not require you to understand something, you might not have learned it, and that the gap in your understanding is likely to be invisible or easily missed by yourself.

For example it is often noted that members of minority groups have to learn quite a lot about the majority culture in order to participate in society, but the reverse is not true. In the dominant group it is optional what you learn about minorities.

It sounds to me like OP either has classic straight white male fragility, or poor taste in friends. Very possibly he's been through some shit, but if he's getting yelled at regularly by minority women to check his privilege it sounds like he's over-estimating his understanding of other people's lives then getting pissy when this is pointed out to him, instead of reflecting.

Alternatively, consider monkey poo. If you annoy a monkey they may pick up what comes to hand (monkey poo) and throw it at you. That doesn't mean monkey poo is hate speech. And you should ask yourself how you earned this shower of poo.
