to be honest, i'd say this is progress. yes, there are people throwing shade at MRAs. yes, they are using phrases like 'toxic masculinity' which don't usually go down well with MRAs. but we are getting discussion! support, even! from my perspective at least, they agree with us on the issue, although our ideas about the causation are different. i'm kind of glad. let's look on the bright side, hey?

They're trying.

One thing that does irk me about the 'ending toxic masculinity' narrative is that it implies that the reasons men suffer suicide or poor mental health more regularly than women is because of what's inside us. That's like the notion of predestination in Calvinism; we can't escape our own toxicity. That's a really horrible idea to implant.

Just to bring in some good news:

The BBC world news podcast had a good five-minute segment on IMD. It was actually something akin to positive, nuanced, and compassionate - staying clear even of the typical caveats along the lines of "of course women have it worst, BUT", let alone reinterpreting IMD as a call for men to take more responsibility.

Yes, I know, BBC is still largely feminist on social justice issues - and it still stays clear of the talking points where we probably disagree with feminists the most, such as male DV victims. But it has not completely given up on its commitment to unbiased reporting, and I think it is important to celebrate progress as well.

I wonder if the male suicide rate is what it is because men are being bombarded with messages that their masculinity is toxic.
