So, let's not flip this one. Just say no. How is this one a no?

Society may pressure a woman to give more emotional labor. Alright. Does their employer?

Is that listed in the job description? 'Candidate must support students going through difficult times'? Or, should you just sympathize, acknowledge, and refer the student to a... I don't know, professional? One that is trained to help people in these situations?

Ok, let's flip it now. Men have societal expectations to be strong and lift stuff.

If my job is to sit all day, but I am a man with big muscles, I should get paid more because society expects me to be strong. You know, occasionally a box will need to be lifted and we will be expected to do it. So where is our pay increase?

[–]awksomepenguin 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly. The student in this example had some real nerve to demand more emotional support from someone who really has no need to provide it. "I'm sorry for your loss. I'll email you the lecture notes," is about all that needs said by the professor in this situation.

A complete and utter "Fruit cake". Academia is losing credibility by the day.

  • A communications studies professor wants colleges to compensate female faculty members for their "emotional labor," such as "supportive communication" and generally "making a person 'feel good.'"

But women only do that for other women.

And if a man tried to make a woman feel better he could be fired for sexual harassment.

  • Brandi Lawless argues that emotional labor is equivalent to other academic work, such as teaching classes and grading assignments, blaming the "neoliberal agenda" for making emotional labor an expectation.

But it is not "other academic work", it's not academic work at all, it's not even work.

Lawless also calls on communication studies professors to produce more research on emotional labor that other academics can use to make the case for additional payments, concluding that “given the additional work that is expected of us from students, colleagues, and administrators, we must make arguments for compensation.”

But for women only.

Lawless isn’t the first to make this argument, however. University of California, Berkeley professor emerita Arlie Hochschild popularized the theory in her 1979 book The Managed Heart, and “emotional labor” is commonly taught in women’s studies and sociology classes.

Berkeley, who would've guessed?

Does this mean if a student reports feeling sad after a class the professor will take a pay cut?

[–]tenchineuro 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

ROTFL, upvoted.

These charlatans take tuition fees and deliver indoctrination NOT education. Sue for refund PLUS damages. FRAUD. The colleges are loaded with crooks who steal from victims ("stuudents").

[–]5th_Law_of_Robotics 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sure why not.

Actual labor can be paid in actual dollars.

Emotional labor can be paid in feels-bucks.

Go ahead and award yourself as many FBs as you think you deserve. No, as many as you feel you deserve.

Sorry! I've didn't tought that a link toward 4chan where I find it was appropriated.

[–]theothermod 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Okay. A 4chan link is likely to disappear quickly.

It's good that you made the effort.

That’s called a psychotherapist, so I’m sure if you applied to also be the schools psychotherapist you would make more money. Only you would actually have to train and work more.

They should be paid extra for: 1. Working in the first place 2. Tolerating male counterparts 3. Tolerating male students in campus 4. For additional work they do at home 5. Having emotions and managing them 6. ......

The list could be infinite if you want more money than your worth.

[–]tenchineuro 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

For additional work they do at home

Wait, isn't that unpaid labor?

[–]movie_addict97 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

They are doing it for themselves not others. Do men get paid to do chores in house like fixing things?

[–]tenchineuro 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree, but I've had no luck explaining this to feminists. Nor to some communist posters I've crossed swords with on other forums.

[–]KingRobotPrince 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Why not pay them a little extra? They might end up taking on a higher pastoral role than male academics? (Subject to quantitative and verifiable evidence, of course.)

But, then again, male academics might put more hours into their work, might go above and beyond because of the male drive to achieve. Might have a little more knowledge to offer their students.

So I guess you'd have to say women can have a bit more pay because they mother children, but they can no longer complain about any income gap, because they are basically recognising and supporting the idea that men and women contribute differently to their jobs and should be proportionately rewarded financially for it.

This has to be a joke.

"Emotional labor" has never failed to translate to, "things I don't want to do but sure as heck want the benefits of."
