For years, I've held (and expressed) the view that DV/ IPV is at least as much about mental/ emotional/ psychological abuse as it is physical, yet it's almost always the case that official stats record instances of physical abuse only, and discussion of DV always revolves around physical violence.

To focus on physical abuse alone is to miss at least half of the picture, especially since women are generally far more adept at psychological abuse than men. The fact that psychological violence leaves no obvious bruising or scars does not mean it is trivial; quite the reverse.

Also consider: one partner A is emotionally abusive; after a while, the victim B snaps and strikes out physically.

If B is female: this is a celebrated restoration of justice; the woman is labelled a victim and hero for standing up; the man is a pariah

If B is male: they are victimised a second time by society and the legal system, and labelled an abuser; the woman is labelled a victim and hero for their endurance; the man is a pariah

Been there, done that (as B). It gets to a point where - after years and years of drip, drip, drip and despite years of conditioning and despite one's internal reluctance to escalate - it really does "just happen". I know it sounds odd, but I'd much rather she'd just belted me one.

But that was the past, and I was no angel either.

You can find similar stories to yours written by women, and they're treated like heroes. The burden of peaceful, polite behavior should not be placed on victims of emotional terror.

I agree. Women are far more adept at psychological terrorism, and our gyncentric and feminist culture encourages this by portraying these women as 'brave'. There's no stigma in society for women at all.

If someone walked into your like and threatened to take your house, your children most of your money and kept that threat up day-in and day-out for weeks and months - well I'm surprised more women don't get killed quite frankly. If someone walked off the street and pulled that you'd probably be entitled to shoot them.

I agree, psychological agression is hugely damaging.
We have focused on physical violence because it is easy to understand, and physical injuries are visible. Also, it is legally definable and prosecutable.

The other reason for the legal and social focus on physical aggression, and it is a really good one, is that physical fights can get out of control and result in permanent injuries, PTSD and even death.

Women sometimes say "I wished he would just hit me, that isn't as bad as the psychological abuse".

Interesting article.

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can make me think I deserved it.

XKCD has a relevant cartoon as usual: https://www.xkcd.com/1216/

If the focus was on psychological abuse there would be hundreds, thousands of studies proving that men are the perpetrators almost always. There would be also objective studies proving something different but they would be ignored.

It makes complete sense, people don't start swinging at each other on first dates. It's something that is created by the conditions of the relationship.

[–]wegie125 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't know if I would define it as a trap but our society treats it as though it is normal. Abuse is abuse no matter what the person looks like that gives it or what the person looks like that receives it. It is no better for a woman to hit a man than a man to hit a woman. Yet the justice system and the people around will cheer when a woman does such an act. It makes me sick

[–]Kyle_Fischer 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Great article. And, when men don't take the bait, women start slapping or punching at them until the men grab the woman's wrist in self defense causing bruising. Then, the woman calls 911 and says that she was assaulted and shows the bruise on the wrist as evidence. Or she grabs an orange and puts in into a sock then beats herself in the face with it causing bruising.
