never understood the not getting out of the car thing.

In the UK its the opposite not getting out is considered rude/im-proper. a signal that you are not going to do a runner.

UK tourists who get stopped by US police will instinctively get out of the car immediately to show they are not going to flee.

police fear for her safety and tell her to leave. woman hangs out window into oncoming traffic yelling at them to be safe. woman gets out of car and approaches car, gets arrested and says I'm not doing anything wrong, I'm not endanger.
