Fine until you separate and your female partner makes a false allegation of domestic violence or child abuse and you lose your kids and career.

A male is very unlikely to get custody of his children after a separation. Less than 10% of contested custody hearings result is a male given custody or even joint custody.

To make anything work it would require judges to:

Give custody of children to the father in 90% of contested cases. To make sure there is no doubt that the father will get custody.

Anonymity for all domestic violence or sex abuse allegations.

Prison for any female making a false allegation.

Etc etc

There is the assumption in the article that the average earnings gender difference (incorrectly called a pay gap) is a problem that requires a solution.

It seems obvious to me that at the family level, if the father works less hours in paid employment, the mother will need to work more to make up the shortfall. There is no direct economic benefit (to government or the family) to having both parents working less hours, they will pay less tax and be able to afford less goods and services.

If adopted, I think the effect will be lowering men's average wage which will close the earnings gap they express concerned about, but given women's surveyed preferences for part-time work and more life-work balance jobs women's earnings will barely move. The emphasis for the solution is influencing men's choices for an issue that appears to be due to women's choices.

Another option would be to encourage women to work more hours, in jobs that pay higher wages (and in some cases are more dangerous) so the average earnings of women can be increased towards that of the average earnings of men.

Sure, it mostly the employers who are preventing dads from working less hours, not mothers who want to be the ones who work reduced hours or no hours at all so they can be the ones to tend to the children - it's employers.

Poll after poll, survey after survey we keep seeing the same trend - slightly over half of working mothers would prefer not to work at all much less work reduced hours.

Why is there a need for this dog and pony show to hide the fact that the biggest obstacle preventing more men from increasing their work life balance is the mother of his child who wants to be the one who is the primary caregiver to his primary provider.

Can't work.

Women marry up. Hence the husband is most often the biggest earner. Thus it makes no sense to slash into his job.

Also, it decrease expected alimony.

There is no gender pay gap.... If it were legal to pay women less than men, you wouldn't see a single male working.... We don't send all of our business to China because 14 year olds produce a better product....
