Completely disgusting the way those things are abused, and there is never a negative consequence for filling a false protective order. Until people (mostly women) are held accountable for perjury in these cases or until they can't be introduced in family court the abuse will continue. It's like handing women a loaded gun in divorce cases and allowing them to fire it without penalty.

protection orders that are meant to offer protection for those in serious situations are now being used as a weapon to turn the tide in divorce; a weapon that overwhelming targets men.

I mean, that line alone is not something I've generally associated with Huff. Po. editorial lines until very recently.

What I'm trying to suggest is that there might be something of a shift happening and that after all the abuse and scorn, some more social justice and feminist-leaning outlets might just be starting to take this kind of thing more seriously.

Or is that overly optimistic?

It's weird how we live in a patriarchy and women are oppressed by men in all ways yet the law enables them to casually hurt men like this. But not the other way around.

My girlfriend was being harassed by her husband when she was seeking a divorce (he even falsely accused me of sexually assaulting my girlfriends daughter, but the resulting investigation cleared me of that bullshit at least), so I am in no way opposed to system to protect victims of domestic abuse.

Some people are assholes and there needs to be a system to protect against such assholes.

But, with any system, there is a potential for abuse. Especially if the system is designed to act swiftly and decisively. And as such it is important to have a level-headed and reasonable discussion on what can be done to prevent such abuse. Because, believe me, it is utterly surreal to hear someone accuse you of a heinous crime. It is truly a "What the f..."-experience.
