I think the idea is that a product women "need" is taxed therefore women have to pay taxes on the product they need and it's unfair. I think none of it should be taxed. Condoms, period stuff, tp, dental and hygiene products.

[–]iiMSouperman 19 points20 points21 points 9 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

have tax free versions provided by the gov, no problem.

The problem comes when women insist on using the "premium" brand products, which are luxuries/not necessary.

[–]Prometheus720 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And it's stupid as fuck when there are menstrual cups that women can buy which are cheaper and which produce less waste than piles of tampons and pads.

Some women don't seem to be able to use them but in every thread I've seen about it, they all convince another couple girls to try it/try it again and then minds are blown.

Free basic tampons can be unsafe due to the dyes used. So yeah, most people deserve access to safe products :P

It's the bleaching of tampons to make them white. they are not dyed. But same-ish issue.

And despite the fact they meet these standards, it has been shown, in the source you requested from me no less, that there are health issues with these products not accounted for by those standards.

Not true. You're entitled to your own opinion, not your own facts, troll.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Women survived thousands of years without. They don't need them. While I'm not a fan of taxes (high), it is a product and is, as it should be, taxed like every other product.

[–]Cagg 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

We all survived without plenty of things but to say we dont need it like it isnt integrated into society is being intentionally daft. Women cant stay at the hearth growing crops and taking shifts like a community like they used to. Our society has moved passed hand made hair tampons and moved on to disposable. My point isnt "oh no womens have to pay for something" its that theres a bunch of shit that shouldnt be taxed.

Basic hygiene items shouldn't be taxed. Basic shaving cream, basic tampons/pads, toothpaste, toilet paper.

Hell id say even basic condoms.

Up the tax on true luxury things, tobacco, sugary drink/snacks, crap like that we dont really need. Basic things dont get taxed now bread, milk, eggs. But some foods sont get taxed that should. Cases of soda etc.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Will they/you die without it? No. Everything you mentioned as basic hygiene items are a luxury, not a necessity.

[–]Cagg 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Toilet paper?

[–]Alurcard100 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

[–]Alurcard100 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

fucking lol

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Technically and legally speaking, its a "luxury tax" on tampons. I dont know any reality in which necessity of use of such a product would be considered a luxury...But ya know, thats what happens when a bunch of dumb dicks make laws that apply to vaginas.

[–]Cagg 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I could see it if pads werent taxed. Like tampons would be a luxury if there is another option.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Don't get fooled by the semantics. In no way should hygiene be considered a luxury. Its very telling that most of the states with this absurdity are Republican controlled....you know...the morons who think the earth is 6000 years old....yah, those fucks

[–]Cagg 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I mean idk i feel like 14$ toothlaste with whitening and a bunch of special shit being taxed as luxury but standard toothpaste being tax free sounds fair to me.

[–][deleted] 26 points27 points28 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I think that tampons, pads, and diva cups should be tax free and even sold at a super-discount. So should toilet paper, jock-itch cream, floss and toothpaste.

[–]Reddit_is_my_Home 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So do I need the underscore when I write you in come November?

[+][deleted] -8 points-7 points-6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Toilet paper, floss, and toothpaste are already tax free. They are what is called staples and not taxed.

Not sure I want to know wtf your reason for needing "jock itch cream" at all is, let alone on the regularity of toothpaste.

Most prescription things are tax free too.

Tampon tax...

yup this whole feminist thing should be over before I die and I shall die happy.

[–]ekudram 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Obama Care Act (I know what its really called) does tax all tampon's. Also taxes all medical devices. Ergo Obama can say what he wants but he had passed a law that taxes women more then men. Women use more products classified as medical devices then men. FYI: Obama Care is sexist.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Do you know that women use healthcare many times more than men? Do you know that its illegal to offer different prices on insurance simply because of sex? Dont even say how women get worse health/longevity outcomes etc.

Its very apparent that you dont.... how sad.

[–]ekudram 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Actually I know all that. Was not talking about the insurance aspects of this. More the Taxing.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

People who use and buy more products to better and lengthen their life = MIND BLOWN!!

How can this be????????

[–]3G6A5W338E 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Tax is paid for food, ffs.

That's a far more pressing need than tampons.

Shaving is not something you have to do. Having a period is not something you can control. Not exactly a very good comparison there.

That's an dress code rule for your job, not a basic cleanliness issue. Apples and Oranges. It's like comparing toothpaste and dress slacks.

[–]fakewallpaper -3 points-2 points-1 points 9 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Ok, true. I wouldn't say 'basically every job', there are plenty of jobs that don't require that, such as service industry and manual labor jobs. However, the jobs that require to be clean shaven are the types of jobs that also require a certain level of professionalism in the dress code, perhaps even dress shirt and tie. Should those be tax free too? Where does the line end? I think all necessary hygiene products should be treated the same, tax-wise, (whether they be fully taxed or minimally taxes or not taxed at all). In my opinion, that includes things like toilet paper, toothpaste, tooth brush, etc. I think tampons/pads fall in this 'necessary' category, I'm not so sure that razors could be considered 'necessary'. I would venture to guess that women actually use razors more often than men. So believe me, if I was in this for a 'pussy pass', I'd say no tax for razors as well. But I'm not coming at it from that side, I'm coming at it from a logical side.

[–]Alurcard100 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

come to Australia we have gst so everything is taxed.

The diva cup actually is more popular now than it used to be. But I obviously can't have an unbiased conversation with you because you seem so in the mindset that all women are super crazy extreme feminists.

[–]Mr_Smoogs 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

If women were given bargain basement tampons paid for in full by the government, they would still buy the luxury version. You can go to your local homeless shelter and get free cheap tampons.

[–]fakewallpaper 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

As someone who has a reliable income, taking free tampons from a homeless shelter is not something that I would ever do. If tampons are provided free at a homeless shelter, they aren't meant for the cheap-ass woman who doesn't want to pay for her shit, they're meant for the homeless woman who can't pay for her shit. That's like taking food that a church provides for people who can't afford it just because you don't feel like buying your own groceries.

[–]Mr_Smoogs 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Isn't food essential to survive? Should be tax free.

[–]fakewallpaper 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

If you read my comments, you will see that I never actually said tampons should be tax free. I said I think they should be taxed at the same level as other essentials like toilet paper and toothpaste.

[–]CocaTrooper42 -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Nothing stopping you from buying women's razors or shave cream. It's the exact same product except for the color of the plastic.

Also there's a difference between growing a beard and letting blood run down your leg every few weeks

[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points-3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

We should add a tax!!
