I know this. You know this. We all know this.

But it still nice to read articles covering it.

[–][deleted] 22 points23 points24 points 9 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

How is this even still debated anymore? My roommate is a level 8 SJW/feminist and even she doesn't believe that sexism is responsible for the pay gap.

[–]Pickle_Jr 24 points25 points26 points 9 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Your level 8 SJW that doesn't believe in the pay gap is a unicorn. I am a college student. I'd be afraid of the possible ridicule I'd receive if I walked into any class at my UNI and said that the pay gap doesn't exist. In my sociology class the wage gap was disused. One guy spoke up against it and it was the end of him pretty much. The professor was a guy even.

Most of these kids are going to take a professor's word as fact.

One thing which I learned in college is to never trust a professor. Even with things unrelated to SJW stuff, I've heard professors say blatantly false things. I've had teachers in elementary school, middle school, and high school, who said that it was illegal to not report a crime. That may be true in other countries, but in the United States its perfectly legal to do nothing. I've also had teachers say that you were legally required to perform CPR on someone who needed it. Again, there is no law requiring a person to do this. I even had a teacher who said that soda cans have tape worms on them. A simple look at the health code proves this to be false.

I even had a teacher who said that soda cans have tape worms on them.

Well, to be fair - there's no reason why a tapeworm couldn't be on one. They don't come with anti-tapeworm coatings the last I heard. Though it'd be kinda rare to see...

Anyway after everyone introduces themselves literally the first thing out of his mouth is "Did you know women are paid 70 cents for every dollar a man makes for the same job and same hours worked?"

Raise your hand. Ask if they have a source for that.

When they state the BOL report, ask them to explain how the methodology of the report, which specifically does not compare same job and same hours, supports his statement.

And then transfer to another class, because he's failing you for sure.

I'd be afraid of the possible ridicule I'd receive if I walked into any class at my UNI and said that the pay gap doesn't exist.

I'd ridicule you here. There is obviously a gap. The issue is whether sexism is involved in this gap.

[–]Jex117 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It's important to specify the facts. There is no wage gap; there's an earnings gap.

[–]ShakespearesDick 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Which means nothing until women decide to go into dangerous high paying jobs.

[–]Jex117 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yep. A lot of people don't realize you can make close to $20p/hr as a sanitation worker, entry level, no experience required - just show up every morning at 5 am ready to toss half-rotten bags of trash into a garbage truck.

[–]ShakespearesDick 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But it's icky and I just got my nails did

[–]BookOfGQuan 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The professor was a guy even.

That won't make a difference. Unless it makes him harder to reach.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The vast majority of my friends believe in the pay gap myth. I see them posting on social media about it all the time. My friends are also older and well educated, with almost all of them having STEM degrees.

[–]stop_stalking_me 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Is it even possible for a lvl 8 SJW to possess such logic? Also how the hell are you her roommate and haven't wanted to bash your head into a wall?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I live with my girlfriend and she keeps me sane. Trust me though, sometimes I want to jump out a window because of my SJW roommate's idiocy. The pay gap is the only thing she is logical about.

It will never die as long as feminism has it's creepy hooks into academia. I really won't even matter when women are 90% of college graduates.

They will never let the message that women are the victims of society, even while they continue to enjoy greater privilege than any demographic that has ever existed in the history of humanity.

Why not? Because feminism benefits greatly from the lie. Just like any other religion.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Can you explain your greater privilege comment? Honestly curious

[–]wicknest 10 points11 points12 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

feminism looks at "equality" like a buffet. they target non-issues (like the pay gap), and fight it with inaccurate information until it benefits them.

heres the thing. women for a long time in the past were admittedly looked down at and seen as less capable and less fortunate. this was at the same time that a majority of women lived their lives taking household jobs (such as taking care of the family), and many women were okay with this.

so establishing that in this point in time, being a woman was like being a disabled puppy; it cant really do much for itself without its "owner", but the second the puppy falls down some stairs, everyone feels sorry for it. besides that, the puppy generally lives a carefree life, right?

so there was obviously no type of "law" that specifically created this, it was simply based on ideologies in the past. it was just what you were supposed to do when women were down on their luck. help the damsel in distress.

fast forward through the decades, where progressively laws were passed and changes were made to allow women to have all the freedoms she desired that men had. along the way societal norms evolved alongside these changes to where we view women as no different (except for straightforward biological differences). women are free to choose whatever career path they choose, and absolutely nothing is set in place to hold them back.

heres the problem. the "cherry picking" issue that a lot of people address is that back in the day, as tough as women had it in some aspects, they also had it pretty well made and could live a simple life if they managed to find a husband that could support them. nowadays, even though this has clearly changed over the decades, many people (especially women) seem to believe that they still have it "rough" in society. since women have achieved the freedoms they once lacked, they still want to hold on to the things that once benefitted them in the past (ie. having men pay the check, pay for drinks, being supported for in financial struggle, and in criminal cases, etc.). feminists want to convince people that the world is out to get them. they want to be able to live that carefree supported life, all while having all the freedoms they could possibly ask for while men pick up the dirty work. who do they look to when they want that provided support?

tl;dr there were pros and cons to being a woman in the past. now, women these days want to hold on to those pros of the past, while still having the pros of the present.

[–]wicknest 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

the direction this country is going scares me. to think that these women who think like this are going out into the world and are going to be the future. what kind of lies will they be telling their transgendered 2 year old....

[–]9279 28 points29 points30 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Anywhere Ive worked men have been expected to work harder and even do anything physical even if everone holds the same title and the environment is described as a team. Just my experience though.

[–]hackableyou[S] 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah that is my experience too. Equality is a buffet.

[–]Leigh_Cheri 12 points13 points14 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

My SO phrased it perfectly:

"If women were cheaper labor for the same amount of work why would any corporation hire anyone else but women?"

[–]SarahC 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Because the reason they're cheaper is they make more mistakes so the business calculates that into the pay.

But if you have too many mistakes happen, they all snowball into a cluster fuck, so you have to pay for some expensive guys to sort things out.

[–]Leigh_Cheri 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Um... not even close. I'm hoping this is satire. If not, who could we hire to sort out that sentence?

[–]SarahC 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Hehe, yeah totally satire. I just tried to think of a reason other than the obvious. =D

[–]runner557 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Feminism will never let this go. You can present all the evidence you want. You can talk for as long as you want. The feminists will never, ever concede this front.

I orginally found this article as it was linked from the popular economic site: realclearmarkets.com

[–]Fortherns 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Somewhat thrown by the reference to global warming though.

[–]locks_are_paranoid 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I once heard a Literature professor claim that male broadcasters were paid more than female broadcasters. I mentioned that most of the male reporters on TV tended to have vastly more experience than the females, but the professor didn't listen.

[–]chambertlo 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Everyone who visits this sub knows this. It is the feminists and regressive liberals that still believe it to be true.

[–]MelkorHimself 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Tens shocked.

[–]EsraYmssik 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Trouble is that they (feminists) have changed the claim.

Yes, it's comparing lifetime EARNINGS. Yes, it's due to men taking more dangerous jobs. Yes, it's due to women's choices; preferring life over work.

Which is all proof that society is misogynistic, by forcing women to 'choose' to be 'inferior' workers.

[–]hackableyou[S] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Maybe it is just because I goto church and talk to a lot of Christian women, but it is always the wife who is pressuring the husband to let her quit her job so she can be a stay at home mom. I don't think it is the culture, I think it is what women naturally want.

[–]EsraYmssik 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm not willing to speculate whether "it is what women naturally want", but it is notable that EVERY culture in the world has (and has had) some degree of gender based division of labour.

Of course, the feminist view is that even current stone-age cultures that have NEVER been contacted by modern societies are SOMEHOW part of the PatriarchyTM .

[–]DarylDixonK -4 points-3 points-2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Women are just too fucking over emotional and bitchy. They are a slave to their hormones. To another extent - so are we!

Stand up to those bitches. Don't let them call the shots.
