So, my school has a fairly large feminist group, and I think that's great. They don't necessarily do anything too extreme. They kinda hang around, talking about gender issues, being well informed, etc. But recently, they did something that seems outside the usual.
They taped some barbie dolls around the lobby. On the walls, on the stairs, everywhere. Some were clothed, some half naked and some fully naked. I think there may have been about twenty of them. They were mostly female dolls, but there were about two male ones. On the dolls themselves, they put printed out messages on their faces and genital regions. Most of them read "I'm not asking for it."
I was a bit confused at first, but slowly noticed a small chalk board hanging on the wall that wasn't there before. It stated a few facts about sexual violence, such as "8% of sexual assaults are reported to the police."
The one that caught my eye was "1 in 4 women claim to be afraid to walk home alone at night."
After thinking about it: Why is this being represented as a major issue? It's not that I don't care about women feeling safe, but paranoia is a completely natural thing. Is it men's fault for 1 in 4 women not feeling safe at night? I don't really think so. This statistic almost sounds as if women are SUPPOSED to be scared for their lives. As if the entire world hates them and wants to rape them.
Any opinions?
