Black guys kill someone: it's just those guys, can't be cultural.

Muslims shoot up a disco shouting Allah Akbar: just those guys, can't be cultural.

Women falsely accuse men of rape for attention: literally never happens.

One guy rapes a woman: OMG ALL MEN ARE TO BLAME!

If the best they can find is one dude as proof of rape culture, that's pretty pathetic for their position.

Disappointing - thus far Schow has been superb in her skepticism of anti-male lynch mobs.

However, at least she still rejects eloquently the attempts to make the case paradigmatic, when it is not.

Even that's doubtful.

What's the evidence he raped her again?

[–]Dick-Punch-Man 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

People caught him in the act. Sexual assault not rape.

[–]Icohunter 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

He was convicted so lets be fair, I think people are forgetting though that there were several extenuating circumstances (not meaning his status as an athlete) that led to his reduced sentence and those are fair.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

He wasn't convicted of rape, though.

His sexual assault conviction was based on the narrative that two overly drunk people were messing around consensually when one fell asleep during. That was all they could prove and what the sentence was appropriate for, but the media stretched the context to act like the worst possible interpretation was the one demonstrated in court (it wasnt).

[–]IcyTy 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

No sentence is appropriate, someone shouldn't be punished because a partner falls asleep during a consensual act. Brock claims that he stopped out of disgust and left and was attacked, so by his account, he voluntarily stopped for some reason, likely because he felt disgusted realizing he was finger-banging someone non-responsive.

His own cognition was impaired by drink, so being slow to realize a partner passed out is understandable and he shouldn't be punished for that.

We can argue moral appropriateness, but the court is concerned with legal definitions. They chose to litigate it as a strict liability offense because they did not want to take any factors into consideration besides what would help their case.

The "downside" is a relatively light sentence for what is being construed as rape, but on the other hand it would have blown over as a harmless accident if the facts were actually taken into account.

There is no such thing as strict liability sexual assault that doesn't involve minors so far as I know. Can you explain your claim on that point?

He said he felt nauseous. That could be solely due to alcohol or due to a combination of alcohol and disgust.

He was convicted so lets be fair

You should ask Brian Banks about the fairness of being convicted by a jury on no evidence.

[–]crabpipe 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Brian Banks never saw a jury. He took a plea deal.

That is despicable, I do think its 100% wrong the view of society that a women's word can elicit such a huge backlash on a man without evidence. How do we fix this?

[–]IcyTy 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The thing is, Emily Doe claims to not remember anything (blackout) so it's not exactly her word against Brock Turner so much as it is the two Swedes who claimed to have seen him pelvic-thrusting on top of her and claimed she looked unconscious at the time.

I think they were just jumping to conclusions and covering their asses, personally.

Well the British established the concept of fair trials hundreds of years ago around the same time they decided democracy was a good idea. Maybe we should read the Magna Carter for inspiration?

[–]Mens-Advocate 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

A recent article published in the UK complained that feminism is undoing human rights originally enshrined in the Magna Carta. I'll try to find the article again.

He was convicted so lets be fair

Convictions do not mean it is fair for us to assume that they committed the crime they were convicted for, or that a crime occurred at all.

[–]HugoBorden -3 points-2 points-1 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think the sentence was too harsh. If the woman did it instead, everybody would only joke about it, that's all.
