I'm boycotting the movie, but not because of any of this. I'm doing it because I think it looks like a shitty movie.

Also, I think he was wrong about Mad Max. When I watched the movie I got more of the impression that she needed him more. He could of ditched her on several occasions and been fine. In fact, he would of gotten into less trouble if he wasn't trying to save her.

Tuner problem with the film is simple: by remaking it and replacing the men with women it implies that there was something wrong with having men in the original and it needed repaired.

True. If they wanted female Ghost Busters, they should made it a father daughter movie.

I'm not boycotting the movie, I'm not taking the blame for the movie tanking. I'm going to wait for it to netflix to watch it.

I'm not going to watch Ghostbusters. It's nothing political, I just don't think it looks good at all. I guess if it tanks though, everybody is going to be blamed for not supporting this "milestone" moment in cinema. It doesn't help that Melissa McCarthy and Leslie Jones make up half the main cast. McCarthy I just don't care for, Leslie Jones, whenever she's on anything in SNL, I have to change the channel.

No Harold Ramis?

Not interested.

I will boycott Ghostbusters... I will not spend $20 to support a feminist producer and his philosophy!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Not this boycott stuff again ... first off, the article is wrong. Plenty of MRAs actually saw the film Mad Max and liked it, so "most" of them didn't take a pass. Secondly, it was ROK that suggested a boycott, and that's not an MRA site and Roosh himself disavows MRAs quite often. I didn't hate the movie because it was feminist, I hated it because it was so blatant in its plotting and characterization that the entire movie was like a children's book in its complexity. 10 year old me loved Miller's style. 46 year old me thinks the guy really needs to give people names and write an actual plot, or else hand the writing off to people who do it for a living.

IMO, this article misses the boat, entirely. I'll take a pass on a feminist movie from a feminist director because I go to a movie to be entertained by a good story with good characters. I don't go to a movie to be proselytized to by someone with a political agenda. If I want screed or polemic, I'll just settle down with Netflix and watch some documentaries.

I saw it hated it, it was sad they killed the Hero, Joe who was rebuilding civilization and the welfare state.

In all seriousness they were all idiots, the only likable character was the dude with the tumours. The fucking trailer was better then the whole Mad Max: Fury Road movie, it had all the cool special effects, none of the dingbats, including the poor excuse for Mad Max.

I did like that new Star Wars movie, and I'm aa trekkie, a Niner to be specific, not whatever they call star war fans, wookies?

I'll concider watching the GB movie, but only on Netflix.

If you're movie gets bad reviews.... make it a crusade for bigots to go see?

[–]cymrich 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

movies are made great partly by writing and partly by acting.

you could have the best actor/actress in a role that suits them perfectly and still have a shitty movie because the writing sucked.

you can have a great plot with lots of interesting scenes and twists and still have a shitty movie because the acting sucked.

I say this because these remakes are really a slap in the face to the originals on more than one level but in most cases it has nothing to do with gender.

obviously my examples are mostly my opinion...

lets start with Conan... Arnold Schwarzenegger made that role his... his cheesy delivery of lines was part of the charm... I don't think anyone has ever actually accused him of being a good actor. What he IS good at is appearing very menacing and intimidating. hence the reason he was so incredible as a robot from the future with very few lines in the Terminator movies. The new Conan movie failed on all counts here with the new actor and as a result, sucked by comparison.

Total Recall... similar issue.

Robocop... I liked the new movie well enough but would have liked it more as a sequel instead of a remake... the new actor really didn't pull off the roll nearly as well Peter Weller... he just wasn't the Murphy we all knew and loved.

Mad Max... I never watched it... not because of any antifeminist sentiment but because I heard so much about it that I knew I wasn't going to like it for other reasons. essentially its a 2 hour car chase where the title character is mostly just an observer... I would grow bored of that after about 10 min... while this one didn't flop like most the others I've mentioned it definitely upset classic Mad Max fans... and of course that was all blamed on misogyny.

Planet of the Apes... horrible writing... the originals with their cheesy monkey masks were far more intriguing and gave much greater depth to it all.

Clash of the Titans... probably my favorite part of the movie was when someone found the robotic owl and made some amusing comment. other than that the original seemed far better despite the vast improvement in special effects used in the new one. Not even Liam Neeson could save this one!

I'm sure I could go on and on but my point is that many of these remakes are just trampling on the original and using the name to cash in or push an agenda... I'm not interested in seeing movies doing either... and we all know that ghostbusters is being used for BOTH! It also drastically changes character personalities and just curb stomps all that was canon before that made the movies great. furthermore it includes an actress that I personally feel is far more obnoxious than funny, not because she is a woman but because I find her quite vulgar and tasteless (melissa mcarthy in case you weren't sure)... so why would I ever even consider paying money to support this shit show?

I think my favorite example of doing it right would have to be Star Trek! the characters are already so well established that it would have destroyed the name to change them... instead the (main) characters are roughly the same with minor tweaks. The story is inclusive of everything that came before and didn't just disregard everything and rewrite history. I think they could have been sued for inciting riots if they HAD done that!

I don't really feel Benedict Cumberbatch portrayed Kahn that well... his acting was great as usual, just not "Kahn".

also, oryginal robocop looked and behaved like a mostly-machine entity, which it was. New robocop looked like a guy in a fancy suit.
