Unprovoked 'one punch' attacks are now subject to harsh penalties in Australia unless the perpetrator is a woman in which case she gets off with a small fine as usual.

“There’s this claim that men are suddenly second class citizens. But with the gender pay gap still at 17.5% in favour of men, women in relationships still doing twice as much of the unpaid domestic tasks as men, even when both partners are bread winners,” O'Keefe said.

Cool. Now compare that to the workplace death gap, or in general the expectations placed on men to work longer hours and put their long-term health at risk for their job. How many

“Women are four times more likely to experience violence by their partner than men, women are more than ten times more likely to be killed by their partner. It’s a bit of a stretch to say that men are second class citizens. Isn't it?"

The first statistic is, assuming Australia and the US have similar gender ratios of domestic violence, false. IIRC it's actually something like 60/40 total, and 70% of nonreciprocal IPV is committed by women.

I don't know about the second statistic since it seems easier to measure (although it could be based on murder convictions), but while women are more likely to be killed by their partners, men are several times more likely to be killed period.

But let's not play Oppression Olympics. Both genders are advantaged and disadvantaged in different areas, and arguing about which is worse usually turns into comparing apples to oranges.

However, there is one very compelling argument that men are treated as second-class citizens: people CARE about women being harmed by gender inequalities, and DO NOT CARE about men being harmed.

Guardian columnist Van Badham criticised Devine’s comments labelling them products of “paranoia”.

So. Saying we live in a Rape Culture, or believing in the existence of an all-encompassing Patriarchy which degrades women in favor of men isn't paranoia, but saying that men are second-class citizens because (insert huge list of ways men are treated inferiorly to women) is?

“I’m an advocate of the full equal rights of women for the law and attention to the traditions of our society, which has privileged men over women,” she said.

Notice how you never said you advocated for the full equal rights of men under the law, which they either explicitly or de facto DO NOT HAVE in most countries - e.g. right to opt out of parenthood, right to bodily autonomy regarding not having unnecessary surgeries performed on their genitals. You also left out the fact that there are also areas in which the traditions of society have privileged women over men, and by and large while a lot of the old "male privileges" have been reduced or eliminated, most of the "female privileges" are still there.

“Absolutely I do not believe that all men are rapists or all men are dangerous. It’s a mischaracterisation of the movement that’s not so based on facts so much as Miranda’s paranoia.

It's not a mischaracterization when saying shit like "Men need to be taught not to rape" is considered mainstream Feminist rhetoric.

“We have to face the reality -- the overwhelming perpetrators of domestic violence against women and other men are men. That’s not to say that all men do it, but there is a definite gender cultural problem here that we as a society have to address because women are being hurt and women are being killed.”

Replace "women" with "whites" and "men" with "Muslims."

The comments of Latham are not worth reproducing, but ranged from challenging feminists to admit that the gender pay gap exists because “women work fewer hours” and personal attacks on both Badham and O’Keefe (if you're that desperate to hear them, watch the clip above).

...So much for objective journalism. One side's comments are valid, the others are "not worth reproducing," and also let's throw in some scare quotes to discredit things which are accurate.

The truth of the matter is however, that we currently live in a society where, on average, one woman is killed every week at the hands of a current or former partner while one in three women has been a victim of physical or sexual violence since the age of 15.

The truth of the matter is that we live in a society where 3-4x MORE men than women are killed per week. And if you're including physical violence in victimization rates, than I'd bet the rate for men is well over 50%, possibly even close to 1.

unpaid domestic tasks as men

Bullshit. The higher-earning man is the one who pays.

84% of working women told ForbesWoman and TheBump that staying home to raise children is a financial luxury they aspire to.

http://www.gallup.com/poll/186050/children-key-factor-women-desire-work-outside-home.aspx

More than half of women, 56%, who have a child younger than 18 would ideally like to stay home and care for their house and family,

The evidence is just so overwhelming women don't want it. The feminists still shove it down their throat.

“We have to face the reality -- the overwhelming perpetrators of domestic violence against women and other men are men."

They're saying that even male victims of DV have mostly male perps. They haven't even read studies it seems.

It's impossible to tell who is killed by their partners more as it's impossible to tell if women use hitmen more. Warren Farrell already dealt with that.

I dont even get the argument. Men commit more crime which proves that they are not second-class citizens...how? Total non-sequitor. That's like saying black people are currently causing disproportionate crime and this proves that they rule the US and can't possibly be discriminated against.

I like the cut of your logic. These arguments are so often based around preconceptions that nobody notices. Another one is "women attempt suicide more often". So they are either vastly incompetent at suicide or not really trying. Why does that mean men need less help? Women are twelve times less likely to succeed than men, they get more second chances, more opportunities to be helped. Surely men having a greater chance of succeeding means that they should be prioritized to prevent that first attempt?

I wish that cuck-host would shut up for a minute and let the guests speak.

Why did they even bother bringing guests on? The host talked over them and told them to shut up anyways. (Except the feminist..she was allowed to speak over everyone whenever she wanted)

[–]actingverystrangely 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You are right. At least here was a debate with TWO SIDES TO THE ARGUMENT. Wow! That the host was so biased reinforces the institutionalised bigotry that exists, but it is amazing

  • that this took place at all

  • that there were people arguing against feminism. On TV. OMG

I'm triggered

[–]CaptainnT 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I watched the video hoping to hear the experts debate the subject...instead I heard a host telling the people he disagreed with that they were wrong, and made them stop talking.

When you consider the background of the host, Andrew O'Keefe, it makes complete sense.

O'Keefe is a past chairman of the White Ribbon Foundation in Australia, an organisation dedicated to the prevention of violence against women. He was one of the founding members of the campaign in Australia and has been an ambassador since 2004. The campaign is active in schools, workplaces, sports clubs, councils and other community organisations, and seeks to rally men and boys as leaders in the fight against violence.

As a result of his work with the Foundation, O'Keefe was appointed to the inaugural National Council for the Prevention of Violence Against Women, which drafted the report Time for Action: Australia's National Plan for Reducing Violence Against Women and their Children on behalf of the federal government.

"Because men work harder to earn more for their families, they have no right to complain about the misandry the government dumps on them."

[–]Rockbottom503 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, that wasn't an article written from a biased perspective in the slightest 🤔🤔🤔
