They complain about manologues, but really it is women that are the masters of extreme verbosity without actually getting to the point.

Just look at this article as evidence.

Some people just like hearing the sound of their own voice no matter what the sex.

[–]questionnmark 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yep. What do you think the proportions are overall though?

[–]Mitschu 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[How] can you stem such extraneous, long-winded trains of thought?

Approximately 850 words later...

[...] try this: When you hear yourself saying, “Now, to answer your question,” ask yourself whether there was a good reason you didn’t start at exactly that point.

Uh, Julia, please quit womonologuing. Surely your entire rant should have been just "How do we stem extraneous, long-winded trains of though? To answer that question: When you hear yourself saying 'Now, to answer your question,' ask yourself why you didn't start there."

30 words total. Question asked. Question answered. Look at that. Womonologue averted.

She is just femsplaining the term "mansplaining" to us less enlightened troglodytes. Didn't you know that anything with a Y chromosome must have everything femsplained to them at least three times.

Femotional is redundant.

You've gotta have some serious fucking balls to do what that woman did, it's like she forgot she wasn't on tumblr or something and got a reality check.

[–]McFeely_Smackup 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

“We’re almost out of time; can you keep this short?”

as she drones on for paragraph after paragraph whining about the fact that people talk to her.

[–]fengpi 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's a very good thing that no woman ever talks too much. Or brings-up irrelevant items like her feeeelings when they don't belong.

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

TL;DR:

Why do men do all these things? As a woman I'll tell you...

It is also clear that the more powerful men become, the more they speak. This would seem a natural correlation, but the same is not true for women. The reason for this, according to a Yale study, is because women worry about “negative consequences” — that is, a backlash — if they are more voluble. Troublingly, the study found that their fears were well founded, as both male and female listeners were quick to think these women were talking too much, too aggressively. In other words, men are rewarded for speaking, while women are punished.

It's too bad that how much one speaks isn't the only factor, but the content of their speech. Droning on irrelevantly versus giving relevant details both employ high volubility.

I sometimes contextualize my arguments too much. It's embarrassing when I suddenly notice that the person I was talking to already knows the context, perhaps even better than I do. It's embarrassing also when I notice that the person couldn't care less about the context, his eyes start to wander or perhaps he yawns.

But, nevertheless, if the thing I'm trying to argue for or explain is important enough, I just feel I need to contextualize. That's because most people are, quite frankly, pretty ignorant. And many things don't make sense to them unless they are put into a context (or a story). If you can't contextualize you could as well shut up (which is, of course, always an option worth considering).

A couple of days a go I was drawn into a discussion on driving while speaking on a phone and whether a hands-free would make any difference. Somebody asked my opinion. I said (I'm naturally paraphrasing here) that there is evidence indicating that it doesn't matter what you do if it distracts you from driving. Our brain has a short-term memory and its capacity is pretty low. To simplify a bit: if it gets full of distracting things, that makes driving dangerous. While driving is mostly automatic, sometimes we have to process something unexpected consciously and urgently. And that's hard if our short term memory is full of words from a phone or audiobook or whatever. For some reason listening to a phone tends to distract us more than listening to the people in the car. But that difference pretty much disappears over time when we talk more on a phone. The safest thing to do is to eliminate all distractions: no radio, no talking, no phones and so forth. But because that won't happen the next safest thing to do is to learn to deal with all kinds of distractions, not just phones. And that, in my experience, happens by consciously learning to shut off the distractions. If you, for example, talk on a phone and find yourself all of a sudden in a difficult crossing, just learn to shut off everything that's going on with the discussion and concentrate solely on the traffic.

There's a manologue for you! In my defense I must say that I was talking to my son and his girlfriend.

And I know that my manologue cuts many corners. But I still think that it made more sense and as such had a bigger impact than if I had said: "Don't talk on a phone while driving. Period".

A lot of women I know have problems asserting themselves, I wonder if this contributes to the whole "people keep talking over me" thing.

Also I thought mansplaining was supposed to be more like telling a woman how her own periods work then ignoring her when she says "actually I only bleed for 4 days"?

[–]x-system 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You see, this is just a way of stretching the meaning of the made up word. When someone made it up, that definition you gave was accurate, now it is anytime a man talks when a woman wants to but isn't assertive enough to shut him down.

Manalogue is a pretty clever word for a woman to have come up with.
