This year, all new students in Sweden’s two opera conservatories will be female. They actually need male singers for their productions. But quotas or any action to attract male singers is out of the question.

Yes I was very confuse by the article, and probably because I know nothing about opera or about an opera college.

So as read the article the only question I was hoping they answer was: If the school needs a bass or tenor then they hire the best bass or tenor who applied be it male or female?(yes I understand that bass or tenor is mostly only male) Yet the article kept stating that they chose the best sporono or mezzo-sporono, and never answered the question.

That is a metaphore for the rest of the social problems caused by feminism.

That's hilarious. So the problem with rejecting 100% of the male applicants is that there are plenty of unfilled "sidekick" roles for men, but women have to compete with each other for the lead? Those poor dears!

I would love to see how it would play out if a role that can only be filled by a woman goes unfulfilled because the male faculty keeps rejecting 100% of the female applicants.

At the end of the day Sweden hates males. This would never be tolerated if the genders were reversed.

I'm hijacking your post here, I am Swedish and would like to point out an equality issue regarding our language. Rapist = Våldtäktsman. It literally means "man who rapes". Sexism is 100% an issue in Sweden, but it goes way beyond women these days.

If the sexes were reversed half the article would be devoted to what could be done to increase the numbers...not only for the opera but for education in general.

Yep.:\

consider this the end of opera in sweden. what music is worth hearing without any bass? just sounds like a bunch of screaming. bass gives the sopranos the foundation they need to sound good. Beethoven's 9th would sound terrible without the bass.

I wish them good luck. they will need it.

"In Sweden..."

Not to mention everywhere else.

"Where have all the good tenors gone, and where are all the basses?"

Am i the only one who heard that in Bonnie Tyler's voice? Probably.

I hope the Swedes enjoy Sharia Law. I hear it's nice and equal for all.

I don't understand feminism... bash the native men into the ground, then import even more traditional males to fill the void. (duhhh??? makes no sense to me)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Good. There should never be quotas based on gender alone. Now since a choir works a lot better with a range of voices, it could make sense to set brackets for people i.e. We need X sopranos, and that would accomplish the same end. but the way we fix this is most definitely not with more quotas. Sweden is plenty fucked up already.

[–]toooooommmmmy -5 points-4 points-3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I'm pretty sure that Sweden has no gender quotas. I seem to remember that they are possible for a short period to correct a big imbalance.

[–]CommanderZx2 25 points26 points27 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Actually Sweden had gender quotas for universities, but they dropped them as soon as they started benefiting men instead of women.

Apparently discriminating against men in university applications with quotas was perfectly fine, but that quotas should just vanish when it goes the other way.

Yes, but as I said Sweden has no gender quotas. Now vote me down, you silly people. :)

I'm confused, I got the whole lacking of males in specific schools, but is it truly based solely on not wanting males, or is the standard too high for the men to qualify? They said the school test the applicants in and take the highest scorers; is it the schools fault that the men don't score high enough? Given what was said; there was a lack of males in opera from an early onset, so with no competition they wouldn't have a big drive to get better in the long run since they are valued early on.

If they had some kind of big competition that involved the schools mentioned and the results of them, I think we could get a better insight on this issue. I don't know anything about opera so I need more.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think what it comes down to is that highly talented male singers no longer see a future in opera. they have bills to pay and mouths to feed, they can't invest their entire lives on singing what's becoming an outdated tradition. instead they would rather learn sound engineering and make soundtracks for movies, commercials, etc.

[–]Dnavich 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Especially since the field is biased against them.

[–]omegaphallic -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Maybe there they're having a hard time recruiting men BECAUSE IT FUCKING OPERA!

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Government needs war fighters, productive laborers, and tax payers. Those are men, and the women provide them. 1000 men and 1 woman can produce 1 of them every 9 months, but 1000 women and a few tired men can potentially produce 1000 of them every 9 months.

It's. That. Simple.
