As women take more active roles in defending this country, it’s important that we address some of the discrepancies that provide men with options unavailable to their female counterparts.”

This pairs well with the picture that clearly shows all the men with shaved heads and the women with a full head of hair.

This pairs well with the picture that clearly shows all the men with shaved heads and the women with a full head of hair.

And also shows the women wearing the very same crew necked t-shirt as their male peers.

No reals, only feels.

The tattoo rules are real.

Maybe renewed attention to the hair/headcovering issue will be an unexpected side effect of this little skirmish. Most armed services members, during most of their careers, just need to look neat and professional, and a wide range of hairstyles meet that criteria. But this bullshit of allowing long hair and hijabs and turbans in combat zones has got to end. Female? Tough luck. Sikh? Tough luck. Cut your goddamned hair and wear your helmet. Yarmulkes don't seem to me to pose any hazard, but if we're going to take away everybody else's special head adornment...

I thought a big part of the reasoning behind shaving recruits was to take away any notion that they're a unique snowflake.

[–]xNOM 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That and lice.

[–]5th_Law_of_Robotics 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Which makes it more bizarre that women are exempted: in my experience men are far more likely to have received a cooties shot in childhood, conferring lifetime immunity to such things.

[–]chavelah 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think reasonable people can disagree over whether or not shaving is desirable as a recruit training tool. But if we're going to keep doing it, we need to do it regardless of gender or religion.

Beyond the recruit stage, all branches permit a variety of hairstyles, which seems fine unless you're actually going into a combat zone. There's nothing inherently unprofessional about hair in a bun or a Sikh turban or a hijab. They're just not appropriate on the battlefield.

I thought a big part of the reasoning behind shaving recruits was to take away any notion that they're a unique snowflake.

I think it actually originated as a means of controlling head lice in close quarters. All the stuff about removing individuality came after as justification.

The rule is sexist because it is applied equally? No. This is the result of sexist uniform regulations. Keep them the same, and this wouldn't be an issue

[–]aokusman 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

So because of her the uniform should change?

[–]chavelah 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

No, the uniform rules should change because they make no sense. It's utterly stupid for male and female soliders to sport different necklines in their working uniforms. Dress uniforms, fine, those have always been intended to put fashion over function.

[–]wylajb 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

In the attached picture, they are wearing the same undershirts.

[–]chavelah 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Correct. There are both roundneck and V-neck undershirt for females to wear under their fatigues. The Marine recruiter who told a female candidate with a tattoo below her collarbone that she was ineligible to join the Marines was simply wrong.

[–]bufedad 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, the same uniform regulations should apply to women as apply to men. No skirts, nothing different. The only exception that is valid, is a different tailoring of the dress blues around the breasts, as the male regulations would not work for women physically.

[–]bufedad 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Women wear a different uniform than men. Hold them to the same standards and suddenly this isn't a problem

[–]wylajb 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The picture shows female Marines in crew-neck undershirts.

[–]aokusman 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Ok cant wait for the guy who could not pass basic because he could not finish 2 miles in 16 minutes but the girl passes after finishing 2 miles in 22 minutes.

[–]kingeddy15 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yea this was my complaint with some NCOs I talked to. Men arnt born better runners then women. It takes the same effort for a man to run 2miles in 16mins then it does a women. I can understand the push-up difference. But it was lame in basic when girls only need 20pushups to pass.

[–]bufedad 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sorry, you must be referring to the Army... the Marines require a 3 mile run....

The perfect score 3 mile run is 18 minutes for men... 21 minutes for women.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Always hated wooks. Still do.

[–]astyaagraha 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Pingree argued that a man with a tattoo in the same place on his body would be allowed to join the Marines because he would be able to cover the marking with the Marine-issued crewneck T-shirt for men. Female Marines are issued V-neck t-shirts, meaning that Pimental’s tattoo would be exposed.

And the female Marines in the photo are wearing what type of t-shirt?

[–]mossm93 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think is a fair complaint. Tattoos prevented me from joining for a long time so I can understand the frustration.

[–]Nissa-Nissa -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Seems fair enough?

[–]jtaylor73003 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

In what way. Women can have different haircuts, grooming standards, and different physical requirements that all effect them getting in and getting promoted. I never hear a single word about making all these things the same. Now we hear how the same reg for men and women somehow are against women?

[–]Nissa-Nissa -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Well if they were issued the same regulation clothes it would be fine. That seems stupid?

[–]jtaylor73003 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

No. They are issued the different clothing so they have different clothing regulations. I only reported that women have several other different regulations that are in their favor, but you think it is stupid that this one regulation isn't?

Edit. A female uniform can be different than a male's uniform. Dress uniforms usually have the biggest differences.

[–]Nissa-Nissa 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Women should conform to the same standards as men in the army- as they have always been the army standards and not 'male' standards. But this is the case where the cut of the neckline of a t-shirt is preventing a woman from joining whereas a man could. That is stupid, because it hinges on something so petty and changeable as a few inches of clothing.

[–]jtaylor73003 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Wow. You think women conform to the army standards. They conform to the female army standards. A separate book of regulations that apply to them. The same with the Marines, Air Force, Navy, and Army. The female physical standards in the Military are so low that their High Excellent is equal to the Barely Pass Standard of the male physical standards. I don't see how something applied equally stupid while you accept that women are treated completely different then men.

[–]Nissa-Nissa 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I say should, not that they do.

I can think that the crew neck v-neck thing is stupid without supporting any of that.

[–]jtaylor73003 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Only if you call all the hypocrisy stupid. Big secret time if the Marines wanted her they just get a waiver for the tattoo.
