It's a protest over an antichoice law recently passed in the state. Unlike the antichoice law, which is very effectively blocking poor women and rural women from exercising their reproductive rights, the Viagra law is not going to pass and was never intended to pass.

This is like aiming a loaded gun at someone and saying "oh don't worry, I wasn't going to shoot".

Legislature is not the correct venue for satire.

[–]kragshot 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This has been done historically as a means to cast scorn on an existing law or bill proposal.

[–]intensely_human[🍰] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Lots of things have been done before.

[–]bufedad 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link

I understand the point she's trying to make.

It's incredulous to me that there is such a double standard though.

Women can kill your unborn child without ever even consulting you.

However, as a man, you cannot even get a vasectomy (a procedure that literally involves no one else, unborn or otherwise) without your wife's permission.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

You can - it is up to the doctor.

[–]bufedad 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

I shopped around for my vasectomy, and all of the doctors I would trust with the procedure required it.

YMMV

[–]turntheradioup 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Tell them you are divorced or getting a divorce.

[–]bufedad 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Tell them you are divorced or getting a divorce.

That isn't the point. The point is that women want bodily autonomy to the point where they can kill your unborn child without your knowledge or consent. This is a constitutionally held protection.

Yet, men are not afforded that same bodily autonomy.

[–]turntheradioup 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I get that, and its bullshit, Im with you. Im talking short term. It's what I did. Of course I was getting a divorce at the time too.

No, I really think you're comparing apples to abortions here

Bodily autonomy.

Killing an unborn child because it is inside your body, involves your spouse far more than the vasectomy.

A woman getting her tubes tied would be the equivalent to a man getting a vasectomy, and a cursory glance at /r/childfree will tell you that anyone, male or female, can face an uphill battle trying to find a doctor to perform such a procedure.

And yet, a cursory glance at /r/childfree doesn't show any woman being required to get her husband's permission to get her tubes tied.

Same thing where I live.

They would likely say the same to a woman wanting to get her tubes tied. Many Catholic hospitals actually outright refuse to do the procedure at all, even if the woman will already be opened up for a C-section.

In the case Ponter vs Ponter, it was ruled unconstitutional for women to be required to have their spouses approval for a tubal ligation.

Which the Catholic hospitals can and do circumvent by just refusing to do the procedure at all.

Catholic hospitals aren't circumventing spousal approval, they are against birth control, and they are circumventing having to go against their beliefs.

Catholic hospitals have no position on spousal permission.

The vast majority of U.S. doctors refuse to do any abortions at all.

[–]bufedad 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Yes... The vast majority of U.S doctors refuse to do vasectomies. What's your point? Doctors specialize in an area, and only doctors who specialize in that area perform the related operations.

[–]Karissa36 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

You cannot possibly be so obtuse that you think these two things are equivalent. The vast majority of OB/GYN's refuse to do abortions because they don't want to be continually harassed and possibly shot. How many Urologists refuse to do vasectomies for the same reason?

I'm calling troll here, because nobody is that stupid.

Edit: a word

Um, do you have any source for this statement?

How many Urologists refuse to do vasectomies for the same reason?

Urologists refuse to do so without a wife's permission.

I'm calling troll here, because nobody is that stupid.

Well, you can be, but I'm not going to say it.

[–]Karissa36 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm done feeding trolls for today. Look elsewhere.

[–]bufedad 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Done trolling for the day?

Look elsewhere.

It's rare that a troll wonders off on their own.

[–]Lookatmenow8 -5 points-4 points-3 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Use antiabortion/proabortion. It has the benefit of being accurate and you sound less like an ass.

[–]Flaktrack 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Saying you're "proabortion" is like saying you're "pro-shooting-home-invaders". No one wants to shoot a home invader, they do it because they have to. Same thing with abortion.

A more accurate statement would be "pro-women's-choice" because we all know that's exactly what happens... but honestly we all know what "pro-choice" is and what it means.

[–]Lookatmenow8 -4 points-3 points-2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I was referring more to the antichoice propaganda. And you are pro abortion. That's literally all the "prolife" side is fighting. You're fighting for it.

[–]Flaktrack 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And you are pro abortion

Unless you want abortions as some sort of default activity in the face of certain situations, you are not "pro-abortion".

And if you're going to make a habit of simplifying other people's arguments, I fully expect you to refer to "gun control", "net neutrality", and "sexual education" in more meaningful ways now.

[–]franklindeer 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Nobody is "pro-abortion". That's ridiculous. I'm sure all pro-choice people would like to see 0 abortions performed each year, they just don't want to make them illegal or limit access to them.

[–]chavelah 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm as cynical as anybody about changing the terms in an ongoing debate, but this is one change we really need to make for the sake of clarity. I know many people who are anti-abortion in the sense of their personal morality but pro-choice in the sense of not wanting to use the power of the state to enforce their morality on others.

[–]Rockbottom503 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

How the fook did this woman ever attain a public office?? Concern for a woman's mental well being and wanting to ensure she is aware of what she is about to do to her unborn baby cannot t be compared to a man taking viagra pills. Obviously narcissistic with little regard for anyone's well being other than her own ridiculous agenda.

Edit - autocorrect issue.

[–]cmumford 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She probably thought to herself, "they're going to mess with my reproductive rights, so I'll mess with theirs". She then realized, that men don't actually have any productive rights to mess with so she instead decided to mess the next closest thing - which oddly enough affects women too - assuming they want sex with their partners.
