As usual it's either men are to blame or sex is to blame, way to go conservatism for missing the point entirely, can't possibly be because of all these idiots trying to enforce their beliefs about relationships and sex on us.

Amen.

I always see articles about men not marrying but I've never heard one being up divorce laws and custody issues. Is this some kind of elephant in the room that everyone but the manosphere is ignoring?

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's a Catholic priest, so his opinion is almost certainly that divorce in of itself is wrong and should not happen. This is likely why he doesn't bother bringing it up.

It's funny because he even says:

This used to be obvious to us. But ideology is often disinterested in the obvious.

While he is completely disinterested in the obvious.

Pretty much.

I hope everyone will excuse me for not being especially interested in opinions about sex and marriage from a celibate priest without experience in either activity.

But to the point: "A Reflection on a Serious Problem"

I've yet to hear why this is a "problem"? who is it a problem for? Marriage is a fictional relationship status, and it comes with extremely significant repercussions for men...rejecting marriage is an EXTREMELY positive sign of male maturity and self-awareness.

Would we ever see a headline "Men Are More Disinclined to Use Tobacco Than Ever - A Reflection on a Serious Problem"?

Objectively good choices are not "a problem".

If I can try and play devil's advocate:

I've yet to hear why this is a "problem"? who is it a problem for?

Children being raised by single parents suffer more than anyone else. Regardless of economic status children raised by both of their biological parents are more likely to grow into well rounded, well adjusted adults than those raised by single or non-biological parents. Some would say that the increase in single-motherhood is one of the largest causes of this growth in victimhood/entitlement culture.

I don't really know how true this is, but I do believe the bit about children being raised by both biological parents. After all, it is pretty well established that child abusers are most often non-related guardians or friends of the parent(s) invited into the home.

I think the idea that marriage is the solution is just people looking to the past for solutions to a problem that did not exist at the time. I think the concept of state-backed contracts between romantic partners is long overdue for an overhaul.

There has to be some way to incentivise parents to raise their children together, but with the threat of divorce marriage isn't it.

[–]MonkeyCB 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You don't need marriage to have children raised by both biological parents. Additionally, why aren't people bashing the high divorce rates initiated by women if a child should be raised by both parents? Why isn't custody an automatic 50/50? These issues are never discussed.

Fact is women want their special little day that they've dreamt about. They want power over men. And they want to be able to cash out and be set for life whenever they get bored. The only way they can get that is with marriage.

Children being raised by single parents suffer more than anyone else

that is utterly unrelated to marriage, unless we define "single" as "unmarried" as opposed to "one parent".

Two unmarried people can raise children in an identical household to married ones...or for that matter, married people get divorced every day. the vast majority of "single mothers" started out married, so marriage is clearly not solving that problem.

There has to be some way to incentivise parents to raise their children together

agreed, but what we have now is the opposite...incentive to NOT raise children together, because the mother is nearly guaranteed to get crippling financial support from the father.

I suppose I wasn't clear about that because I feel like you agree with me but are misinterpreting my comment. By single I simply meant "alone" or "only one". "Unmarried" in an understandable leap because marriage is so deeply ingrained in our culture.

Two unmarried people can raise children in an identical household to married ones

Exactly. Marriage is an outdated concept in the absence of enforced gender roles. It only still exists because most women refuse to give up the state-backed commitment that was a part of the masculine gender role that benefits them.

Sadly, many young men honestly admit that they prefer pornography to real women. Pornography doesn’t talk back or have preferences or moods. Real relationships are complex and require navigation and negotiation.

Yes, because I should have to suffer, plot, scheme, beg, plead, and negotiate in order to have an orgasm. If that's a "real relationship" then I am perfectly fine with the fake relationship I have with Tori Black. Life is too short to have bad sex and bad sex is worse than no sex.

Most men I know perceive that they are often considered by the wider culture as deficient, even depraved. The “men are stupid” commercials and sitcoms abound. Men are often presented as buffoons, who need women and children to “set them straight” on the simplest of things.

Avoiding legal/financial entanglement with women has less to do with a man's penis than it does his self-respect and no self-respecting man would tolerate being treated like a piece of shit by his supposedly loving wife and being forced to pay for the privilege.

By all means, let's look to celibate men for advice on when and how (and whether) to choose a mate and start a family.

Priests. Not even once.

Tradcon bull shit. Completely missing the point.

I don't see a problem. More men are being freed from the shackles of marriage. This is a good thing.
