Why are the vast majority of refugees male?

There are two kinds of immigrants coming at the moment from Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Jordania, Somalia, Northern Africa and other places. They tend to be men but only some are refugees.

Many are sent by their family or clan to a) find work and thus be able to support those who were left behind and b) make uniting the family possible. The latter ones are - or claim to be - underage because in those cases the family has to be reunited. They tend to be boys, as well, because the trip is seen too dangerous for girls, perhaps rightly so.

There are people who don's have any chance off getting a visa. And they have to know it. I'm pretty sure that many of those have now, for the first time a chance to travel. That's because smuggling people has become a big industry and the prices have come down. It must be an attractive proposal to get away, if only for a few months.

Of course men have a big risk of getting killed, too, if they stay.

One possible explanation: It's a hard trip and women are less likely to get killed if they stay.

Old, young, and women are too weak to make the trip. Single men are willing to risk it and send money back to their family.

That looks like the ones that traveled, without looking at all the camps in the region I'm not sure that the numbers are still mostly male.

From what I understand it has to do with men being expected to support their female relatives and possible wives. Since there is no work in a war torn country, they move to a country where they can support their family, while that family sits in refugee camps. The stats you're talking about is about, if I remember correctly, syrian refugee's reaching Europe.
