The second biggest killer is being crushed by a stampede of women after using Lynx body spray.

You know that snort-like laugh that you make, or whatever? You just made me do that.
Thank you. (No sarcasm.)

Suicide.

[–]theoid[S] 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sorry it doesn't come out on the picture I took, it's suicide.

[–]the_omega99 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think the poster doesn't actually say.

I believe the white text says:

Here we aren't allowed to talk about

the single biggest killer of men aged under 45

but we are here www.biggerissues.co.uk

So presumably they are trying to use the whole suspense theme to get people to check out the website, where you'd find out that they were referring to suicide.

Actually, thinking about it a little, it's quite clever. People tend to avoid talking about suicide. It's an uncomfortable topic. The poster may be referring to that.

[–]nicememeboss 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Clever ? Maybe.

But when im in a rush at a train station or shopping for clothes im not going to stop to check the website.

Poster should give clear information when walking by fast .

I believe Jane Powell (https://www.thecalmzone.net/about-calm/meet-the-team/) is a feminist. See, eg: https://www.thecalmzone.net/2011/04/a-call-to-feminists/

So I'm being skeptical here. It's good they raise awareness, but if they end up blaming men and toxic masculinity it can contribute to the problem. But may be it's good for [some] feminists to start fighting for men's issues. We'll see.

[–]theoid[S] 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thanks, that's good to know.

[–]Boehemyth 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I actually had no issue with that article. It espoused a lot of my own beliefs as well. It was clearly targeted at other feminists, which is why it played so heavily on feminist history, so I'm fine with that. I didn't really gleen any implied ideas of blaming men or toxic masculinity, much less explicit. I'm curious as to what you might have found objectionable?

Thanks for this comment. I didn't know about her BBC appearance. And I agree the biggest problem with the approach of "Men should just be talking" is that men do talk. Just nobody listens or cares: https://notehub.org/hpp2i#weakness

What Brown also discovered in the course of her research is that, contrary to her early assumptions, men's shame is not primarily inflicted by other men. Instead, it is the women in their lives who tend to be repelled when men show the chinks in their armor.

"Most women pledge allegiance to this idea that women can explore their emotions, break down, fall apart—and it's healthy," Brown said. "But guys are not allowed to fall apart." Ironically, she explained, men are often pressured to open up and talk about their feelings, and they are criticized for being emotionally walled-off; but if they get too real, they are met with revulsion. She recalled the first time she realized that she had been complicit in the shaming: "Holy Shit!" she said. "I am the patriarchy!"

I used to sit at Greenham[i] and wonder when the ‘mens movement’ would kick in. Well I believe it’s started – look at some of the great aricles in Shortlist magazine – and as a feminist I welcome it, it’s long overdue.

I think she's providing evidence--much needed in my view--that the men's movement and feminism need not be fundamentally opposed.

[–]victorymonk 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, I am not going to "throw a stone" at anyone raising the issue of male suicide. And given that feminists have larger audience and influence, I'm more than willing to shut up.

Having said that, I am not convinced that addressing male suicide based on the feminist framework will do much/any good. Especially, if it's going to be it's either feminist framework or you are misogynist (which often happens with feminists).

[–]intensely_human 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

FTA:

As a feminist I abhor the idea that we require real men to be strong, silent and always in control. Silence is what victims do, and I believe that if we are to prevent thousands of deaths a year, then we need to do more than just encourage men that its acceptable to ask for help, surely they should have the same freedoms that we’ve won as women.

I'm not going to criticize an obviously good thing. But we have suicide hotlines and support groups already. Granted, not geared to men, but they exist. To address the appalling suicide rates you need to look at why these men are killing themselves and making some serious societal reforms. A man living with crushing debts to his ex-wife who cannot see his children doesn't need to talk about it. He needs family law reform.

The website is more detailed than only a phone line. www.thecalmzone.net

[–]tallwheel 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's good that there is something like this specifically for men, but opening the website...

"TEN WAYS TO BE A REAL MAN"

"BEING A MAN - WHAT DOES IT MEAN?"

"Being male is biology. The rest is up to you."

Did I just open Goodmenproject? Nobody is going to tell me "how to be a man".

I think most people should be skeptical about this organizations, and I would urge everyone go through their articles that they've posted on their website

The "Fighting The Same Cause From Different Sides: Men’s Issues and Gender Equality" is basically filled with bizarre statements that revolve around the idea that masculinity needs to be tempered and controlled to protect society. My favourite jewel is this quote

An example of this connection can be seen in the pressures of a patriarchal society, where masculinity is dominant and valued so highly.

Right.....if masculinity was so highly valued, why are men feeling emasculated and under attack all the time????

The other article - 10 ways to be a man is just as bizarre when it states that men dont have to compete anymore - when in fact we really do - whether its for jobs, mates, grades, etc.

In essence, this organization seems to be about controlling men and preventing action through dispelling it via talk. But talking achieves little if there is no avenue for action afterwords. What's the point about talking about how a guy cant see his kids if there is no divorce reform. Why talk about workplace discrimination if the law states that they are allowed to be discriminated against.

I have been in the exact same situation myself, and it wasn't until thankfully my family intervened that I started to recover. The real killer is that not only male depression can escalate extremely fast ( so fast that psychiatric care comes way too late ) but is also compounded that vulnerable men are funnelled into social isolation. There are no public resources and your peers drop you as fast as they can if you are a depressed male. No one wants to be around a depressed man.

To prevent male suicides you need to prevent men from getting in a hopeless situation, which is in the current state of society challenging. This is why fighting for men's rights is so important, it is not just rights we fight for but also lives. The weakest and most vulnerable men aren't cared for and are left largely ignored. There are dozens of online communities with hundreds of thousands of men who go through this exact process of social isolation. They all share the same vulnerability: they were either heavily bullied, abused by parents, abused by spouse, handicapped, etc. and they all share the same fate. Can you guess what is the response of society is towards these communities? They are further bullied, ridiculed or called all sorts of monstrous things. Then to make things worse mainstream media outlets advise people to alienate these men even further. It all boils down to one thing: society doesn't want to acknowledge the existence of vulnerable men.

To prevent male depression from escalating more and more there has to be a societal reform where vulnerable men start getting the same care and sympathy as vulnerable women do. But I do not ever see that happening in the current course society is taking, which can easily be seen if you look at western charity. Almost all charities ( especially charities aimed at 3rd world efforts ) are aimed to help specifically children and women, the most vulnerable of men are ignored or sometimes even accused of causing the problems of the aforementioned groups. Another example is the massive male homelessness problem. Only the most charitable of people will help men in trouble, but you can't expect that to be the norm. At least not until the acceptance of men's rights becomes the norm.

That is fantastic, and beats the shit out of blaming "masculinity" on why men are killing themselves.

[–]ElectricFleshlight 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You might not want to talk about it

Traditional masculinity holds that men must be stoic and never discuss their feelings, so it kind of does.

[–]intensely_human 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I call that the workhorse mentality. Men are workhorses, who just stand there in the cold and maybe stamp their hooves a bit to break off the ice, but they don't really complain.

"masculinity" is too broad a term to be meaningful in terms of good or bad.

Me, I'm not so much in favor of encouraging men to open up as I am in favor of encouraging others to be thankful to men for their contributions to the world.

Men aren't just not speaking up because of some random habit. They're not speaking up because they are trained (literally, like operant conditioning) by the responses of others when they do.

To make a rough analogy, don't encourage owners of faulty jeeps to take them down to the motor pool, instead encourage the people at the motor pool to see jeeps as valuable. Men are capable of making rational decisions about seeking help.

The reality isn't as simple as "men don't know how to ask for help". The reality is that every man has had moments in his life, frequent moments, when he asked for help and it wasn't there. Perhaps he got a lecture on self reliance. Perhaps he got a cold shoulder, or someone threatening to call security.

Don't tell the kid to take off his coat; he needs that coat in this environment. Instead turn up the heat and he will use his rational mind to take off the coat.

Women see men being tough and assume it's just some random bullshit reflex that we do. It's not. If I'm not tough every day there are people waiting to devour me. My armor is not a problem - what it's protecting me against is the problem.

[–]tallwheel 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm not so sure that this organization doesn't. Check out their website.

[–]intensely_human 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I signed up for their one-time autopost thing: www.biggerissues.co.uk. So it's gonna post on my FB feed on Nov 19th.

As an aside, I'm surprised and impressed that the website designers got away with that crazy font and actually made it work.
