The phrase "real men" (or indeed "good men") alienates me straight away.

It it based upon the premise that there is a threshold that demarcates 'real men' from, well, presumably un-men. Do you know what? I have lived my entire life being told:

  • what to think/ what not to think

  • what to say/ what not to say

  • what to do/ what not to do

When people, even well intentioned people , try to tell me that I need to strive for affirmation, and I will get it from them if I do "x" it reminds me that my status as a man is not in the hands of others.

I am responsible for my status as a man, it is not conditional upon me:

  • opening doors / not opening doors

  • supporting 'he for she' (or indeed being an MRA)

  • slaying dragons

  • eating quiche / not eating quiche

Remember the image of a donkey walking towards a carrot which is tied to a pole from its head? Men like you and me are starved of affirmation all our lives and told we are:

  • broken

  • toxic

  • brittle

  • bad

  • rapists

  • child molesters

  • thugs

Then, we are told (adopts fairy Godmother whisper):

but you can be accepted! There is a way that you can receive validation! Just buy this (Insert name of new soap powder here) and society will approve of you, instead of condemning you! And all your dreams will come true. You will become... (wait for it)... A REAL MAN!

Eey ore! EEY ORE!

While you make some good points that I agree with, I think they are using it ironically in a way, as in 'real men don't cry? Real men seek help' kind of thing. But you make good points.

Be suspicious of any attempt to suggest that your maleness is in the gift of others. Women are told that they can be whatever type of woman they want. Women are wonderful, and women all look different, act different, and are encouraged in their diversity and individuality.

Why then would men be told that they have to do "x" to be a "real" man? Why do we have to:

  • fit into a box?

  • pass a test?

  • meet a threshold?

  • rely upon external validation as to our sense of self?

As for the ironic use of words, I would counsel you that:

  • batheinmaletears

  • killallmen

  • killallwhitemen

...are all very funny until it is pointed out that they are gratuitously offensive and gender bigoted, in which case they miraculously become "ironic".

The point about irony is that you say one thing but mean something else. Which men do not cry? There are three problems:

  • The idea that men are toxic, broken, damaged, brittle, etc is the first problem

  • The word "real" is inappropriate, implying that there is a binary split between men in group A and men in group B. If it is a definitive demarcation (some men are left handed, some men are right handed) fine. But the idea that a qualitative judgement which is fundamental to a person's sense of self-worth and identity, such as their maleness, should be in the hands of another person, especially another person who doesn't even know you and has a jaundiced view about men should be, is utterly reprehensible and egregious.

  • the use of the word "ironic" as a response to criticism about prejudice and bigotry is the quintessence of the motte and bailey approach to arguments. Rather than accept this, recognise that it is weak, weak, weak. Like the people who peddle this nonsense.

I am a man, who cries, who loves, who cares, who values other people in all their diversity and who believes passionately that we can each fulfil our potential when we believe in ourselves, rather than upon the opinions of others.

Hear, hear.

It is very Maternalistic. They could have gotten the same message across without writing it as an insult. You should suggest to them (in a positive way) some new wording that won't turn off half the men that read it.

Since this is college I assume most or all the males reading this are 18+ and considered men? Even if they brush off your suggestion, make it anyway because the poster is demeaning.

[–]SickleSandwich[S] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Agreed, though I'm sorry for making it unclear - in the UK, a college is for those typically aged 16-18, after which they then go to University. It is not a University/College campus.

[–]DasFreakk 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Still a step in the right direction. True, there's room for improvement in the way the message was written, but its still help for men. I was kinda impress to see that.

[–]ocasionallymisspeld 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

The first thing they offer to help me with is my anger.

[–]SickleSandwich[S] 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

This was a quite ridiculous thing I noted as well.

[–]ocasionallymisspeld 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Are you trying to give me anger, so they can get a new client?

[–]SickleSandwich[S] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You caught me red-handed! I get paid by them! Muhaha! /s

[–]pt_Hazard 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I just noticed that. Ya this is no better than third wave feminist bullshit. Also implying that you have to do something (cry) to be a "real" man as others pointed out. A real man can be a lot of different things

[–]SickleSandwich[S] 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Something to note that I didn't make clear enough: this is not a University. This is a UK college, the facility most students attend after secondary school. Students are typically aged from 16-18.

I would like to point out another ridiculous thing they did. Next to one of these posters in the Physics lab, there is a poster offering a great opportunity at Oxford University to learn some extra stuff and put it on your CV. They advertise two days, one for everybody... and one for females only, where they do extra stuff... despite the fact that in the UK this year, the gender gap in Students widened even more, where female University students outnumber males 3:2, AFAIK.

Just a few points I wanted to make known. This college is much worse in many other ways, too.

[–]GumbyDrops 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The 'catchy' slogan imbues the message with completely unnecessary emotion and a theme of judgment (plus an implication that 'toxic masculinity' is the 'real' problem) reminding young men of the exact reason they don't seek help. I'm sure posters with pure, straightforward information would be much better: 'Attention male students: counselling is available. If you are experiencing any of the following issues, we encourage you to make an appointment. We can help.'

[–]SickleSandwich[S] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You are probably right. Please note I wasn't staying these were good posters, rath the opposite. I just wanted to know what Reddit thought.

[–]Dnile1000BC 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Some of the phrasing of the words reminds of another "help site" for men that basically makes them out to be the evil incarnation that needs counselling to expunge them of their evil.

e.g. "Domestic Violence Helpline - Call this number to receive counselling on how NOT to abuse your wife"

[–]SickleSandwich[S] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This was the exact niggling feeling I had, too - but I have to admit that they do offer help for depression and such, as stated.

'relationship issues' is an ambiguous one, and might very well be a 'learn not to beat up your girlfriend' thing.

[–]iainmf 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Shaming young men into getting 'help'.

The floggings will continue until morale improves.

[–]anunusualname 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Do any of your school's publications refer to female students as girls?

[–]SickleSandwich[S] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, actually. Everybody there is typically aged from 16-18. Apologies for not making it clear that I was referring to a British definition of college.

[–]L0cked4fun 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I appreciate their thought, but only you can decide if you consider yourself a real man.

[–]SRSLovesGawker0 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

The moment I see the phrase "Real men do x", my brain immediately switches into rebellion mode and requires a force of will to overcome. My guess is that there's lots of men out there who have a similar reaction.

End result is despite good intentions, a counterproductive product that'll likely reinforce alienation for more than welcome those most in need.
