Absolutely a pussy pass, but it genuinely seems like an accident, so I wouldn't be in favour of sending anyone, male or female, to jail for this.

If she were a young man, this story would be different. I doubt the father of the children would agree with the verdict.

What exactly would you expect them to do? Hang her in town square? It's was horrible tragic accident, and even the father of the children agrees with the verdict.

I'm all for holding EVERYONE equally legally accountable, but in this circumstance despite the tragedy sounds fair.

Send her to prison, like they would for a man. Her ineptitude resulted in the deaths of two children. She should be punished with incarceration.

I dunno, this was an accident. What exactly does incarceration accomplish? It's not like drinking and driving which is a conscious decision you need to try and deter people from. She just made a mistake.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Plenty of young men make the mistake getting caught with pot and are sent to jail without thought. A choice that harms no one. And they go to jail. Let that sink in a moment.

I'll wait

[–]xynomaster -3 points-2 points-1 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

There's no doubt about that. That's because when it's a woman suddenly people actually care about her whereas men are disposable. I'm not denying that.

I just think the right answer here is not to send anyone to prison for an accident that couldn't really have been prevented.

[–]tygertiger[S] 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You keep referring to the incident as an "accident" that couldn't have been prevented. Did you read the article? The evidence indicates the gas pedal was on the floor. Her explanation that her foot was "stuck" under the pedals was rejected by the court. She lied.

[–]TheDude41 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

It's a deterrent to people driving dangerously.

[–]xynomaster 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I mean I agree if she was speeding or driving drunk or something because in that case she made a conscious decision to drive badly and that killed a person.

But for people who just made traffic errors like accidentally pressing the wrong pedal or making a bad left turn or something...I don't see the purpose of incarcerating someone. Here's a guy (from 2 hours ago) who got probation for a similar offense: http://ksn.com/2015/10/21/wichita-man-sentenced-in-crash-that-killed-pregnant-woman-newborn/

I'm not denying that courts go more lenient on women in these cases overall though, I'm just saying I personally believe that for traffic accidents that don't result from purposeful idiocy there's no reason to send anyone to jail.

Guys so time for stuff like this all the time. Especially if it was proven they were reckless

[–]MuFoxxa -4 points-3 points-2 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

So rather than go after her, we need to go after those convicting men of this sort of thing. In this case her testimony and the other evidence indicates this was a horrible tragic accident.

[–]tygertiger[S] 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Actually, the evidence shows that the gas pedal was on the floor and her explanation that her foot was "stuck under the pedals" was rejected by the court. Read the article.

[–]MuFoxxa 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I have literally had my own foot/she slip off the edge of the break, land on the gas and get wedged under the break while accelerating at full speed. Thankfully I was nowhere near any other cars or people and got my foot out before anything bad happened, but that experience tells me it can happen.

Or are you saying she intentionally did this for some reason?

[–]Arby01 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

we need to go after those convicting men of this sort of thing

Sure, let's rally the 10% of the 50% of the population that cares about this (total of 5%) because the other 50% pretty much doesn't care. When men get shafted by the justice system they will point at the two dead children and say, "it seems pretty appropriate".

The solution isn't to try to decrease men's penalties. It's to have the law apply equally to all. Then there will be sufficient concern to make progress. Your approach is useless and short sighted.

Bullsh*t. This is EXACTLY what we should be doing. Working to INCREASE peoples empathy toward men, not just make everyone hurt more.

I want the law applied evenly, I just want the law to also be just and fair when doing so.

Good luck with that approach. I believe it is a waste of effort until we have the law applied equally. I support your ideals, I just think they are foolish.

OH this poor, poor woman. She's going to have to take Uber for the next 5 years.
