I found this story particularly poignant as I was recently informed that a former friend who grew up to be a lesbian radfem has adopted two children with her wife -- a little boy and a little girl (in Toronto). Reflecting on the conversations we had had about "patriarchy" and "male oppression of females" the news made me sick to my stomach. I am guessing that she does not intend to have any men involved in the children's lives, though I could be wrong (I haven't talked to her in years, and live on the West coast). Honestly, I think adoption agencies should have a "no radfems allowed" policy. Would you allow a white supremacist to adopt a black child? What is the following if not child abuse?

My mother’s brand of feminism went from wanting equal rights to wanting to smash the patriarchy, which she defined for my brother and me as “men’s historical oppression of women, which they continue to do today.” No man could escape complicity, not even little boys, she said. Suddenly, men were the root of all of women’s problems and since they had all the power, we had to fight them.

Men were always wrong. Men were aggressors; men were rapists; men were stupid; men were obsessed with their penises; men were responsible for forcing my mother into a heterosexual marriage and motherhood. Mary Daly and Andrea Dworkin had become her prophets. She never once said that “patriarchy” wasn’t synonymous with “men.” She used the terms interchangeably. She told us we’d been forced on her by the patriarchy and, given the choice, she would not have had us.

Flip this nightly lecture to be about what men do to hurt women, and imagine being my brother.

Unfortunately the author concludes that her mother was just mentally ill, and that real feminism is noble and necessary. I disagree. I think the attitudes expressed by her mother are the logical endpoint of feminist doctrine. If it is true that men as a class have oppressed women as a class throughout all of history, then why wouldn't you view males with hatred and/or suspicion?
