We need a lot more women in the Judiciary, especially in Family Courts. They're more likely to be sceptical of women's bullshit and less likely to be 'white-knights'.

When it comes to sentence length, only black women's bullshit, apparently.

Female judges are less likely overall to incarcerate women, overall.

You're being downvoted but I followed the link and you're correct:

Sex,race, and age all have moderate effects on the incarceration decision. (The omitted categories are male, white, and ages 19-29.) The effects of these defendant characteristics are in the same direction for male and female judges but are somewhat stronger among female judges. Female judges are 22% less likely to incarcerate female than male offenders, as compared to 14% for male judges; female judges are 10% less likely to incarcerate white than black offenders, as compared to a 5% difference for male judges; both female and male judges are less likely to incarcerate older offenders than young adult offenders, but again, the difference is greater for female judges - 24% less likely as compared to18% for male judges. . . . But several noteworthy gender-of-judge differences also emerge. Our main finding is that the sentencing decisions of women judges are contextualized more by defendant characteristics such as race, sex, and age and by defendant's prior record. This greater contextualization exists for both the incarceration andt he length-of-term decisions. Specifically, we find that women and men judges give approximately equal sentences to white female defendants, whereas women judges sentence the other race-sex subgroups - black female defendants, white male defendants, black male defendants - more harshly than men judges do. We also find that women judges sentence young adult offenders more harshly but that there are negligible gender-of-judge differences in the sentencing of older offenders. The most prominent finding, however, is that the overall race effect of harsher sentencing of black defendants is enhanced among female judges when they sentence repeat offenders, whereas among male judges the race effect is essentially unchanged. This pattern holds for both sentencing decisions, for both female and defendants, and for younger as well as older defendants.

I too had assumed that women would be harsher on women than men due the male white knighting impulse. But we have to remember that both men and women have biases towards females according to the studies on in- group preference.

That's US based isn't it? I'd expect a UK study to focus on Indian and Pakistani groups.

Yes. It's just one study. A bunch of them would be more convincing.

Just as it's important to use archive links for sexist articles, isn't it a good idea NOT to use archives for decent articles such as this and therefore support honest and fair journalism?

[–]azazelcrowley 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Sigh.

This is basically true of most shit these days.

"Women are oppressed because they aren't socially coerced into being workaholics and throwing their lives at accumulating resources for other people and status, and instead do something emotionally fulfilling that won't give them a heart attack or a stroke in 20 years. Women who do want a high flying career do so without social coercion into it."

^ Patriarchy. The source of all our problems apparently. Still don't quite see how this is sexism against women though.

The conditions for judges are far better than they are for nurses.

The higher levels of UK law still have a significant old boy's club element. On top of that the more senior judges would have entered the legal profession in the 70s and the head of chambers and the like during that time period would have entered the legal profession in the 50s or before. So the problem is not only that there are still rather sexist people in senior positions but that anyone with enough seniority to be a judge would have entered the profession when there were rather a lot of sexist men in senior positions.

Nah its just plain rubbish. Consider if this was true

"insisted instead that the lack of female judges was mainly the result of a “lifestyle choice” by women unwilling to tolerate long hours and poor working conditions. "

we wouldn't have many female nurses. Judges get paid far more, have better working conditions and fewer night shifts. The reason for the lack of women judges is slightly due to the age of judges (although that shouldn't take 50 years to fix) and largely due to law still having a significant element of who you know being more important that what you know (as rather a lot of law graduates find out every year).

Not that anyone is implying this but how about instead of keeping things awful for the men already working as judges, we fix the system so its not as stressful and getting a better cross-section of society at judges.

Judges don't have it bad. Give me a break. It is one of the most pampered positions out there in a sea of privilege (government jobs). That's why it is so competitive.

[–]my_name_is_gato 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I don't know about the UK, but many judges in the States work very hard because budget cuts have left our courts overwhelmed. Yes, it is competitive, but not all judges have cushy jobs.

The average judge in the U.S. makes $120,000 a year. That does not include substantial benefits and perks. Cry me a river over these "public servants". You know how hard you have to work in the private sector to make that kind of money?

Here's a hint: my dad makes about that. He has been working for a major corporation for 40 years. He leaves his house at 5:45 AM every day and arrives home around 9:00 PM. Believe me, he works harder than some self-important blowhard in a robe.

Maybe they can protest this the same way they protest STEM.
