I'm still waiting on my white privilege to kick in. Growing up in poverty and working my ass off to get out of it has been too hard.

Wait, did you send in your application? And did you fill out both sides? I'm at the Patriarchy office now and I can check if it's misfiled...when was it sent in?

Perfect, we have a spot open in the WVSD (Woman's Voice Suppression Division).

You can pretty much name the salary. If it goes over budget, we just garnish the wages of random women to supplement your pay.

Honestly, growing up white in Canada, it always felt like girls and people of colour had a lot of privileges that I didn't. It often seemed like girls and non-white boys were never really bullied like the white boys were, because even the bullies didn't want to be viewed/labelled as being sexist or racist(Most bullies tend to actually enforce the status quo, and bully for and with the approval of other girls).

It often seemed like girls and people of colour were allowed to say the most hateful and bigoted shit towards white boys, and often even acted on those feelings of hate against white boys, and nobody really ever did or said anything about it because it could be viewed as politically incorrect, while any kind of hateful or bigoted shit directed towards other girls or people of colour were always met with direct and instant reproach and punishment. Hate crimes against white boys were often a lot more likely to be passed off as being non skin/gender related as well(like if a white nerdy guy is assaulted because he is white and nerdy, then people would be quick to say it was because he was a nerd, even though a black nerdy kid would not have suffered the same fate, and therefore not as bad).

It often seemed like, whenever things weren't going their way, girls and people of colour always had that sexist/racist card in their deck that they could pull out at any moments notice without any burden of proof, and without any care or regard for whom they were targeting.

It often seemed like girls and people of colour were often given free notoriety, respect or higher social statuses, simply because they girls or people of colour. People would even respect their views and beliefs more because they were people of colour. Girls would find boys of colour to be more desirable, and glorified/romanticized them because they were different(apparently it's not fetishizing or objectifying when girls do it though).

It often seemed like girls and people of colour were given special treatment, priority and opportunities over white boys, whenever possible, and were given all kind of incentives, encouragement and positive reinforcement that white boys never got.

And, really, those same attitudes have persisted far beyond high-school, and you still see them in colleges/universities, in clubs, in the work place and in other social settings and yet, somehow, apparently there is only "white male" privilege.

[–]abcIDontKnowTheRest 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, of course. Because we have "white male privilege" it's everyone's responsiblity to shit on us and make sure we never forget it and also regret ever being born into the surpremacy that is inherent to white straight males.

Oh, and uh, /s in case it wasn't evident.

[–]dangerousopinions 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Unquestionably there are advantages to being white in a predominantly white society. Economic privileges however have a much greater impact than simply being white. The advantages of being white are often overstated. Beyond that, racial issues that exist in the United States are regularly superimposed onto other cultures with a different history and culture. This happens in Canada all the time. I see people who recently immigrated from Africa acting like the problems of black Americans in Mississippi are their own, and that's nonsense.

As for male privileges, there are some, there are also balancing disadvantages, and the rhetoric I see out of upper middle class feminists is just absurd and has no basis in reality.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I'd argue, at least in my country, being white is a hindrance. There's less financial support for white people. There's no white quotas in schools and employment. The only time where it would be beneficial to be white is when your boss is a racist.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Assuming he's a white racist, yeah

[–]Keiichi81 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Honestly, with how many self-loathing white SJWs there are, him being white doesn't necessarily mean he isn't still racist against white people.

[–]dangerousopinions 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think all the extreme rhetoric has caused you to forget that racism does exist, it's just not as trivial as "micro-aggressions". Depending on where you are, there are some considerable advantages to being white. In the southern U.S for example, overt racism and discrimination are still common. In the rest of the country it helps to not be arab or latino. This didn't just stop happening because SJW's became hyperbolic about racism.

[–]blueoak9 -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Unquestionably there are advantages to being white in a predominantly white society.

"Predominantly white" does not apply to all of society unless you are using a simple-mindedly reductionist conception of society. How "predominantly white" is Honolulu or El Paso (75% Hispanic) or LA or New York city or Washington DC....? Most of the predominantly white regions of the country are the mostly thinly populated parts of it.

[–]dangerousopinions -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The population of the U.S is almost 77% caucasian. Even in L.A or NYC white people are part of the majority. There are exceptions, but we're talking in generalities.

[–]blueoak9 -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Even in L.A or NYC white people are part of the majority.

What is "part of the majority"? Doesn't that make them a minority? I'm not quite following.

As for that 77% figure, does that come from a federal government source? Because if it does, it includes a lot of people - People from the Middle East for instance - who do not consider themselves actually white and who do not get treated as if they were white. So actually that 77% figure is just fun with numbers.

Furthermore it is not unusual for third-generation Mexican-Americans to consider and report themselves as white. It's not your fault that the whole system of categorizations is so flimsy, but there it is.

[–]Cuive[S] 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

I don't think I've ever posted anything here before, but I needed to share this experience with those who understand.

I generally don't let stuff like this get under my skin. Hell, I rarely even partake in conversations like this. But I hoped, for some reason, this would go better than those I'd seen online.

I just don't understand how a group of people could be so filled with hate that they don't understand they are being as bad as those they purport to hate.

Where is this "privilege" I'm supposed to have inherited? Because I've never once felt LUCKY to be a white male. I'm sick of feeling like the world's troubles are my fault. I'm sick of not being allowed to understand the pain of others.

I don't agree with this at all. But when I try to convey that, I'm lead to believe I'm just "brainwashed" and simply "don't appreciate how lucky I am". And, even IF that were true, it's still MY FAULT that I don't feel guilty for things I didn't do or have a choice in.

Thanks for hearing me out. I know many of you feel the same way. I appreciate the support as well.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

dude, chill. They're (probably unintelligent teenage) people on the internet who want a cause to get on their high horse about. They're doing it because everyone's doing it, because it's fashionable. I honestly don't think these sorts of people give two shits about people's actual suffering, they just pretend they do so they can feel morally superior to someone. And since they're white too, it has to be a cis white man. They're easy to hate and they don't really face racism in most places, and many rich people are white men. To them, this means all white men are rich.

They're just blindly following an ideology to fit in. It's kind of like a cult nowadays. There is no point arguing with them. They WILL NOT change their mind, because they don't actually care about the issues. They just want to talk about privilege because it makes them feel like they're a good person. Seriously, the whole modern social media feminism thing is bullshit, driven by egoism and vanity. Not even a hatred for men, they're just a good, nebulous group to talk shit about, a group that won't really do anything about it.

Just chill, and believe me, i learned the hard way. Never debate online feminists, unless you want to persuade spectators.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

i hate it when you come up with an actual response, and they just say 'someone doesn't understand opression' or some bullshit.

[–]Lethn 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The sad fact is a lot of these people aren't 'just' teenagers, especially now, these are grown women who actually believe this bullshit. I know that's not what you're doing in general but I think it's wrong to trivialise even slightly these people because there are grown university professors who actually believe this shit and spread it to their students.

I think it's the fact that nobody has bothered to try seriously challenging these morons in public that they've managed to spread their ideology so much in the first place, people clearly think that because they're not being challenged then they must be right about what they say.

[–]FluffyBallofHate 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This just isn't true. A lot of these people are likely adults -- some are social workers, some are academics. This kind of nonsense is not remotely limited to teenagers on the internet.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

how did it get this far? That people just blindly accept feelgood bullshit with blatant disregard for facts? How are these people academics?

I don't understand.

[–]Keiichi81 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They're doing it because everyone's doing it, because it's fashionable.

They're doing it because their lives are literally so cushy and so good and so easy that they need to rationalize themselves as victimized in order not to feel ashamed for how good they have it. They're doing it because they have nothing real to actually complain about so they're forced to make up imaginary ways in which they're persecuted.

[–]asdg 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Bill is an imaginary person. Funny thing in this arguement is that everyone is bill. Everyone is getting offended by what they see on the internet. Hypocritical part is the op who posted this then decided to argue with you. At least you're not nypocritical. Everyone can be bill, in that everyone is entitled to have their own opinon. Bill is just a made up character that applies to all people but i guess op was using him to attack affluent individuals who often white and male. Their claims have no validity what so ever.

[–]Wargame4life 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

oh the fucking irony, perhaps you need to be more like bill.

[–]ultraomnis 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ironically enough my ex-girlfriends brother (er...now "sister".) Posted this on his/her/it's wall. When "she" was a he, he was the epitome of a "privileged" white male. His family wasn't rich, but in no way hurting for money, both him and his sister are privileged spoiled shits. He was bi, but you would never know it nor does it matter really as privilege is derived on outside appearances anyways) Suddenly he goes to college, and Now he's/she's/whatever a full blown mtf trans (still has the doodle) dating a ftm trans (still has the muffin box) and I completely believe "she's" swallowed all this PC bullshit in order to feel accepted and to be on the "winning" team. While I was dating he sister we where very close and his humor was lewd and non PC before the wave of Feministupidity became the in thing to do.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Your earnest responses to people like this are like blood in the water to a shark. It's what they WANT because it gives them another opportunity to "punch up" and then post a mostly fabricated embellished story on Tumblr about how they totes took down another Facebook misogynist.

I've learned the best response is just mockery. Sure you come off as a bit of a douche, but they come off as fucking bonkers when they lose their shit.

[–]Keiichi81 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I like how these SJWs take it upon themselves to gender Bill. How do they know Bill is a "cishet white man"? How do they know Bill isn't a black man? How do they know Bill isn't homosexual or trans?

[–]TacoNinjaSkills 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"Yer peeing in my sandbox. Go away."

Fair point, IMHO. They don't want to be challenged, they just want their hugbox. Sometimes best not to engage.

[–]BruceCampbell123 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Eh, it kinda sounds like your went into that looking for a fight. You're not going to win anyone over with that technique. The best thing to do is to ask questions. Such as "Would this picture still be applicable if Bill was black, or if Bill was Betty?" Questions get people to think and allows them to come to their own conclutions without the answer being shoved down their throats.

[–]Cuive[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think you're right. I'll strive harder to ask more questions moving forward. Thank you

[–]Arby01 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Eh, it kinda sounds like your went into that looking for a fight.

it looks like he missed the message which was "saw something offensive on the internet, ignored it..., profit".

EDIT: There is no "getting the people that post this stuff to think". They are lost until the herd changes direction. The only reason to engage is if you think your approach can sway the invisible audience that might not have a opinion of any solidity (usually because they haven't given it any thought). In that sense, your recommendation is ideal, I only added this to make it clear who you are allowing to come to their own conclusions - it isn't the poster.

[–]James32015 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I guess im a fucking unicorn because as a bisexual, black, not terribly financially secure guy I just don't get offended by shit
