Maths is a Top 10 Tool of Oppression of the Patriarchy.

[–]MyAfricanChild 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This doesn't say much, what do the numbers at the bottom represent? total percentage?

[–]Fiorbeth 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It says just above the picture

Figure 1: Percentage achieving the proficiency level 5 or higher in mathematics by gender, USA, UK, Japan, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, 2012

Not the best graph admittedly no title, labelled axis or units etc but oh well.

While the gap between men and women is greatest in Japan, Japanese women do better than any man in the World. It is conundrums like this that highlights how statistics can be used selectively.

Imagine if I used the data to conclude that men are intrinsically better at some tasks than women, what works be the reaction? "Traditional gender roles hold back women" . And literacy?

Statistics do not lie. People who do not understand statistics lie. One click on the link reveals that this is data from the oecd PISA standardized tests. These are high school children. Moreover this is the fraction that get a 5. There is also a level 6.

One would only expect consistency worldwide if sex were the only determining factor for math ability, which the data quite handily show is not the case. What these data show, is that at this level of ability (5), and at this age, there are factors more important than sex.

Technically the graph is everyone getting level 5 or higher so does include the level 6s though a separate graph or segregated bars to show what percentage of that total are made up by level 6s would be useful from a statistical standpoint.

That is exactly what I meant by "at level 5". I was not clear. People who become STEM professors are off the chart, so this grading system does not tell us how important gender is, up there. From variability studies one would hypothesize that it becomes much more statistically significant, swamping out the other effects we see here.

I'm not sure how this is relevant to the sub? Are we supposed to feel superior? Boys rule, girls drool! Sorry, that's not why I am here. I mean I could be missing the relevance, so feel free to clue me in.

Because.. patriarchy, right?

[–]ichors 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm not sure whether this was posted in order to "prove the patriarchy", but if so, check the graph linked as recommended. It's for national, gendered reading abilities. Girls greatly outstrip boys - pretty much to the same degree as boys out strip girls when it comes to maths. Why don't feminists, who aim at gender equality, bash on about some matriarchal tendency to push boys out of this subject etc.

Seems like a ridiculous selection of facts in order to perpetuate a dead narrative.
