Single dad Canadian here.

I live in fear that my ex would try to change my children's names. They have my surname now, but I know if given half a chance my ex would change it.

Great post, OP. I can give you a first hand account of the Emergency Protection Order situation in Canada too if you'd like. Ex Parte court orders forcing men from their homes on the whim a vindictive ex or as a tactical divorce consideration. Canada is the land of the spurious ex parte.

Can you explain how that means what you said in your OP, namely:

Process for mom: Register the birth of the child in the hospital. Other than using your surname, no problem. There is even someone that can help you fill out the forms in the hospital.

Process for dad: Ask mom for consent

I don't understand. This form says you need the consent of both parents, regardless of gender, and the only way you don't need the consent of the other parent is if there is a restraining order against that other parent, which is totally reasonable.

The only sexist thing I see is the part that says "restraining order between father and children". There are restraining orders between mothers and children too, so they should change that. But again, this difference only applies when there are restraining orders involved. Otherwise the process is the same for both genders.

I looked through that form, and I'm not sure I've drawn the same conclusions as you OP.

It's language is very specific. It says Parent and Other Parent. It doesn't say Mother.

That could simply mean the parent who is the primary guardian filling in the form, not necessarily the mother. In fact the word Mother doesn't appear in the document, but 53 times the word Parent does.

I would assume any father that was the primary carer for a child could fill in this form with the same process as any mother and it should be under the same legal process.
