I like how these women frame having STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE as a negative thing.

[–]SlashSero 9 points10 points11 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Equal standards are sexist of course.

[–]Griever114 22 points23 points24 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Excuse me for wanting police officers that are physically fit....

[–]mansplain 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

when seconds count, the police are only like, 10, maybe 20 minutes away. depending on whether they've finished their lattes yet or not.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yup in Starbucks all over the world you will see cops just chilling , typing their screenplays and finishing their Lattes.

[–]mansplain 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm guessing middle aged women who work in law enforcement and can't pass a physical probably spend a lot of time at a desk.

[–]well-ok-then 12 points13 points14 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If I was the city council, I'd prefer to close the department rather than set physical standards so that old women were not at a disadvantage. It would surely save a lot of money.

Username checks out.

[–]Gstreetshit 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

So they are OK with women being easily over powered and killed by criminals?

I bet they want the same pay too?

[–]chavelah -3 points-2 points-1 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

They seem to be OK with fat men being easily outrun...

[–]Celda 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

How so?

Don't the men, regardless of their weight, have to pass the same fitness test?

[–]Gstreetshit 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They still have to pass a physical fitness test to get in. Then they have a union to protect them when they get fat or a desk job promotion.

[–]mushybees 8 points9 points10 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

but... but... i thought y'all wanted equality? now you're suing because you have to meet the same standards as the men?

[–]Needlecrash 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh equality!

[–]Keiichi81 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

May be slightly misleading. The article refers to it as a NEW physical fitness standard implemented this year. As this woman was an officer for 23 years prior, it can be inferred that she probably passed whatever OLD physical fitness standards were in place.

Her career ended this year after injuries she claims were sustained as a result of a new physical fitness exam every police officer on the department must take.

“I injured my rotator cuff and tendon that attaches to my bicep,” she said.

Aren't those the same muscles used to eat donuts? A disgrace. This woman obviously has no business being a cop.

[–]C0uN7rY 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

If it is a test of physical fitness, then it is right that women should have a different test than men, as there are differences between a fit man and fit woman.

How ever, if this is supposed to be a test of performance and ability. Then it should be the same across the board. E.g. if part of your job may have you lifting 80lb sacks and you cannot lift 80lbs, then you do not have the ability to perform your job and it is fair that you not get that job regardless if gender.

[–]Lethn 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link

No they shouldn't, when it comes to defending yourself it should be the same. If you go easy on women because they're women it's not only sexist ( which is really ironic in this situation because if a man said it they'd be up in arms ) you lure them into a false sense of security.

If the police force went easier on them in their training or changed things as others have already said these women would be easily taken advantage of by criminals, this is just total bullshit being fabricated so they don't have to reach new standards.

These idiots should be ashamed of themselves, being a police officer is no joke. If they tried that in the army not only would they be laughed at but if they had to go to Iraq or some other very hostile middle eastern country they would be absolutely screwed.

Yet another really disturbing piece of evidence for me that there are quite a few women out there who simply don't live in the real world. I've forgotten which country it was but it reminds me of an article I saw where the police force was being told to lose some fucking weight so they could catch criminals. If that happened in America you would inevitably have some very stupid people trying to claim it's discrimination against fat people.

[–]C0uN7rY 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Apparently you didn't get my point...

For a police officer it should be a test of physical ability, therefore the same for everyone.

If it was simply a job that requires you to be physically healthy (or fit) it should be different because a healthy man can do more than a healthy woman.

Do you see the difference? One is about having the physicality to perform duties (same for everyone) one is a measurement of how healthy someone is (different for men and women)

Military (at least the USAF) is kind of the same. The AF pt test was a test of how healthy an Airmen was since uncle Sam covers the doctor's bills. There was a whole other set of standards for Airmen who would actually face combat.

[–]Lethn 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

What you're citing is the difference in training between combat roles and non-combat role, not different training for men and women.

As for genders having different training? I cant stress it enough, with combat you don't fuck around. Also, in regards to your stereotype a large part is down to individual characteristics, if you have a fat guy who's very unfit he's still going to get completely outpaced by a fit girl.

I'd personally like to see some real evidence of scientific research on this whole healthy women vs healthy men bullshit. Yes, even very fit women in general will have smaller musculuture ( this isn't me making it up I've had to do anatomy studies ) but that also doesn't necessarily mean that there aren't individuals who would break that trend that are out there.

When it comes to physical activity as well there are other factors aside from muscle strength that make a difference in combat. Things like, agility, reflexes, muscle memory, speed and of course running speed in general as well as accuracy especially if they're expected to go to a shooting range.

For example, if you take your average muscle head while he may be physically fit and able to do lots of bench presses if he can't handle more complicated tasks and think independently that may actually make him a liability out in the real world.

I haven't even gotten into the various fighting styles and martial arts that don't rely on brute strength which when executed properly are entirely capable of overpowering pure muscle strength, before the inevitable MMA fanbois that lurk on the internet rush to rant at me.

Just something to consider, it's not right to perform tests based on stereotypes and grouping people together, nevermind the fact that it's scientifically dishonest.

[–]C0uN7rY 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

A person can be physically fit, but not physically capable of handling combat, police work, farm work, mining, etc etc.

If all you care about is fitness and health and not what that makes a person capable of doing, then you'd have to have different standards for men and women as men and women have very different bodies.

If you care about what a person is capable of doing, a specific task or aet of tasks, there should be no difference between the genders because, male or female, you need them to be able to perform.

I don't know many more ways to explain my point...

Physical fitness =\= physical ability. You can need one without needing the other and they are measured differently.

[–]todwellondreams 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I wish I had more upvotes to give this. Female fitness is different from male fitness, so if it is simply a test of fitness it really should account for that. There are plenty of fit women who just can't match the ability of men of similar fitness.

If it's an issue of them needing to perform a task on duty and they can't, they absolutely need to be held to the proper standard. I dont care whether a firefighter is male or female, i just want to know they can carry me from a building. But there are plenty of women who can easily chase someone down while being unable to do 10 pull ups.

[–]Stephen1985 -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

No I'm sorry. When physical fitness is an important part of your job then everyone should meet the same standards. Unless we go back in time to when women police officers we're basically there to deal with female offender's and to do administration work. If they are doing the same work and receiving the same pay then they should meet the same standards in every aspect.

[–]C0uN7rY 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You really aren't getting my point at all. I have already said a dozen times in a dozen ways, if it is about ability to perform a task it shod be the same, if it is only about health it shouldn't. I'm done going over this. You keep coming back to women needing to meet the same standard for physical ability which I agree with. I was only making a point about if it was strictly about fitness in the sense if being healthy, it's different between men and women. You simply seem incapable of grasping what I'm saying and it's not worth it to continue this merry go round.

[–]Stephen1985 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I understand what you mean, but you brought up physical health when physical ability was being discussed, it was very confusing.

[–]C0uN7rY 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, and you're not who I was talking to previously. Sorry about the attitude ridden response. Responded without looking at your username.

I was more trying to make the point that this officer would be right if it was a case of fitness rather than ability, but since it is not, she is in the wrong and needs to accept that everyone should be meeting the same standard. Sorry it wasn't clear. Rereading, I see it now.

[–]PerniciousOne 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So when these women are incapable of providing the amount of force required to subdue a suspect, they will have to utilize higher levels of threat (pepper spray, baton, taser, and firearm), instead of a different physically capable police officer.

[–]paragonofcynicism -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah, I don't see any men's rights issues in this article. The details of the physical fitness test aren't disclosed nor are the purposes for the test.

What is the test demonstrating as far as their ability to perform their duties? If this test is being used to ensure they are capable of chasing down a perpetrator, taking down a hostile suspect, or busting down a door to gain entry than yeah, they should have similar standards.

If this is just a general fitness test, then no the standards shouldn't be the same. Men and women have difference in biology that means that standards of fitness will be different.

A fit man can run X miles in 15 minutes, and a fit woman can run Y. A fit man can lift heavier weights. A fit woman will be more flexible. A fit man will be able to sprint at higher speeds than an equally fit woman. These are facts of biology that can't be avoided. And "Fitness" isn't a clear definition. Fitness for what? General fitness or fitness to perform a task.

Since none of the details of the test and it's purpose are provided it is wrong to jump to conclusion and state that this test is not discriminatory.

Jumping to conclusions and judgement without the facts is what we criticize feminists for doing. We are no better than them if we link shit like this and jump on the same bandwagon.
