Unprovoked 'one punch' attacks are now subject to harsh penalties in Australia unless the perpetrator is a woman in which case she gets off with a small fine as usual.

The man did not make a complaint to police, so the woman was released without charge.

This is why it is important to file a police report.

This is why it is important to enable the police to lay charges independent of the victim. There is no way charges should hinge on the victim being brave enough to defy their abuser. Anyone stabbed in the chest and facing life threatening wounds needs to see charges on their behalf.

The police are able to do this. They chose not to.

Probably. In the states at least, felonies are strictly at the discretion of the state, report or no. While they DO weigh whether or not the victim wants to press charges, it's not a deciding factor, so you should still make a report and press charges unless you have a very good reason not to.

Likely very similar in Australia.

Especially when it's a domestic matter....of fucking course he doesn't wanna press charges, because he knows he'll probably be ridiculed, shamed, and she'll trash/burn/sell his stuff (I'm assuming they live together). Which is why he shouldn't HAVE to press charges for a clear-cut felony. Fuck that police force.

The only possible way I could see for the stabbing to be justifiable is if he was substantially larger and stronger, and he started beating her. Then I'd totally understand. But you know they would've mentioned it if that were the case.

In Australia the police can do that. they chose not to.

Stabbed in the chest sounds more like attempted murder to me.

As i recall, on the ABC news they reported that she said, "Next time i'll get him in the heart."

I suspect that wouldn't be a factor if the genders were reversed.

As usual, it is not reported as domestic violence when a man is a victim. The statistics manipulation continues.

How do you stab a man twice and not get charged with a crime? What? It's not a crime to stab a man?

Soon as i saw the news of the arrest and that she was claiming he was the abusive one i knew what was in the pipeline. Such is life.
