Here's another thing to consider. Where I'm from the race pay gap is larger than the gender gap. Why don't we ever hear about a race pay gap?

When there a race pay gap, it's ok because of reasons, but a gender gap is somehow wrong.

[–]elwahrio 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly. I thought it was very odd where it said they had corrected the figures for race. Why the fuck would you ever do that?

4 is weird: Women don't make less because they have children, but look at this study where women who had children make 14£ less than women who didn't. Way to disprove yourself.

And point 5 argues that we need to change working hours and conditions in order to stop men from choosing work conditions that pay more, but point 1 claimed the pay gap is for the same work including hours?? If economists say only 25% is due to discrimination, why are they deliberately inflating the wage gap by a factor of four? Very disingenuous.

1) Correct. The gender segregation of the work force isn't getting any better, so it's affects are not getting any better. "The Wage Gap" is not closing.

2) The higher paying fields also includes higher paying specialties with in fields. These higher paying specialties explains why some doctors make more than other doctors. For a much more in depth look, read Dr. Warren Farrels "Why Men Make More".

While far from a magic bullet that explains the entirety of the wage difference, different work does a great deal to explain different pay.

3) This one says women don't negotiate well is a myth because women don't negotiate well. It disproves it's self.

4) This one says it's not true that Mothers earn less because of fewer hours work isn't true because Mothers work fewer hours for reasons.

5) Correct. In many ways readjusting how merit is determined would do a great deal to close the wage gap. The current dependence on using long hours as a proxy for hard work isn't doing any one any favors.

How on earth would #1 be true considering the wage gap doesn't even exist??? Fuck me it's stupid. It cannot narrow or widen because it is a hoax. It compares the averages of all men working full-time and all women working full-time - it is literally meaningless for all intents and purposes. It compares loggers in alaska to secretaries in L.A. This supposed wage gap was never about people doing the same jobs with the same qualifications.

The fact that men in general earn more than women is absolutely justified by the fact that men accept physically harder, more dangerous, more tiresome jobs that women do not accept. Women would never chop down trees in Alaska, this is something left to men, and it's no wonder it pays better than some menial office job. Also, it's a statistical fact that men work more hours per week. It would be a fucking travesty if they weren't compensated for that.

The "wage gap" isn't a meaningful gap showing some kind of gender discrimination, it's just an intentional misinterpretation of general statistics.

Yeah, and #5 is also bullshit. First of all, there's no discrimination. It was outlawed decades ago, if anyone knows of a single instance of women being discriminated against they should go report it to the police immediately. Then all that's left is the writer's funny ideas how more money should be given to women in indirect ways to compensate for men working more. That's hair raising bullshit right there. Employers are not idiots, they pay for actual work done. No company on earth gives men more just becuase they have penises.

Her paid maternity leave example is the perfect counter-example against her. Hey, when google chose to pay women for nothing, less women chose to quit! Whoa, sweethart, you think this is what "equality" looks like? You probably misunderstood something.

So, basically, because women do choose easier jobs with lower pay and they do choose to skip work more often for family reasons we should simply pay them more, so they could receive the same kind of money men actually work for? Eff off.

Female financial specialists make 66 percent of what their male counterparts make, female doctors earn 71 percent, and female lawyers and judges make 82 percent. That’s all controlling for age, race, hours and education.

Just to play Devil's Advocate, anyone want to take a stab at this?

It was broadly touched on above, but basically both orthopedic surgeons ($519,000 a year, 90% male) and pediatricians ($189,000 a year, 56% female) are both considered "doctors". They say they control for education, but that has to do with things like what level of a degree they got from which university, not what the degree was in.

Just browsing through it you could even think it's a well written piece. But at the end they expose themselves.

This is golden:

What could make a big difference would be if workplaces reconsidered how they compensate their employees — and were more transparent about it. Rather than disproportionately rewarding workers for putting in long hours and making themselves available around the clock, they should reward high-quality work and allow employees more of the flexibility they need to balance work and family demands.

So even though the paygap is women's fault, the jobs should reward a feminine workstyle with mostly unquantifiable measures of work like "quality", and give the flexibility even though some would rather work harder. Thankfully this is a capitalistic world, not school, much harder to feminize.

People can not agree that it exists and if it does why it exist.

There is no pay gap. There is only an earnings gap, and even these myths about the so call pay gap is actually myths about a earnings gap.
