Everyone knows the father is the one responsible for breastfeeding a baby, what could the mother have possibly done to feed it?

(I hope I don't need to put a sarcasm note on that, but just in case...)

Men are considered responsible for the crimes their wives commit still. That was legally explicit for centuries. Although it's no longer the law, the attitude remains.

1) Since we're discussing disparities in the charges, it seems relevant to mention that the father is black and the mother is white.

2) According to this article, they were both charged with murder.

3) There's also this: "While police say the little girl's mother wanted to get her formula and medical care, even sharing her concerns by phone and text message with their spiritual advisor. But Hamrick says in the end, she obeyed her husband when he said no."

So who knows.
