I was about to make a post about this very topic: the earnings gap is not evidence of female oppression but female privilege. Luckily Janet spared me the trouble.

It's counter-intuitive but it makes sense if you think about it. Women work less than men because they are the privileged sex. Male labour is mostly necessary labour (the counterpart for women is child-birth, the most necessary labour of all). If women stopped working there would be major issues with the bureaucracy and in some vital areas like nursing. However if men stopped working civilization would collapse in a matter of days. Male labour is taxed by the state, and the surplus given disproportionately to women. Women work less and are also taxed by the state; however their tax money is also given disproportionately to women. Moreover, men have social expectations/gender roles -- fiercely guarded by women -- demanding that they earn more than their partners. That way, when a woman wants to get married, she can -- you guessed it -- work less.

Hypergamy is the elephant in the room. According to feminist doctrine, women should have no problem "dating down." However even after 100 years of feminism we see not the slightest indication that women are prepared to behave like men in the sexual "marketplace." This leads me to believe that hypergamy may be instinctual. It was kept under wraps in hunter-gatherer bands (where "alpha" behaviour was/is considered socially deviant) but once institutional hierarchy was introduced it was "game on."

Feminism is often conflated with socialism, and indeed many feminists describe themselves as socialists, but what's really going in here has more in common with capitalism. The male is the "proletariat" to the female "bourgeoise." In the same way that capitalists leach off the labour of their workers, siphoning off surplus aka profit, women leach off the labour of men. In this case, profit is extracted via the state rather than the corporation. Regardless of the labels we use, and regardless of whether you subscribe to capitalist or socialist ideology (or something else) it is clear which sex is working more for less benefit.

In the old days, the rich used to be called the "leisure class." At no point in history has the more privileged group been forced to work more than the less privileged group. Work is called work precisely because most people would rather be doing something else. For most of history we could argue that there was a somewhat even division of labour between the sexes, though men obviously had to work far more often and in far more dangerous jobs. After men invented time saving devices in the home and female birth control, wealthy women decided that they wanted the status of their lawyer/doctor/politician/CEO husbands. Hence feminism. Feminism has nothing to do with equality. It produces a fundamentally unfair dynamic in which men are forced to perform the vast majority of hard labour and dangerous work, only to have the fruits of said labour redistributed by the state to benefit females over their own sex.

Janet ends her article by claiming:

"If we really want to close the wage gap, remove the social security net, downsize the government radically, forbid women from accessing their husband’s income and put up a big banner..."

We could do that. Or we could treat men as well as we treat women. The more truly egalitarian the society the less impact of hypergamy.

Since men work more hours and earn more money than women, they also contribute more to the taxbase, which liberal governments increasingly hand out to women.

One thing I don't really see mentioned when people talk about the wage gap; How much of the money men earn ends up being gifted to a woman anyway? A large portion of the wage gap is made up simply of women who don't do as much work as men, yet I'd wager many of those women doing less work are receiving money from husbands at the same time. When thats taken to account I imagine women end up on the MUCH better off side of the equation. That sits in line with the research I remember reading about women controlling the majority of wealth.

Women don't get paid for taking care of children or doing more housework. Some housewives may be pampered, but overall many women make less because of the pressures they face to take on childrearing / domestic housework, and we should recognize that work as a contribution of value even if you may not think highly of it.
