The article is ridiculous on several scores. Adam Serwer, its author, appears to be using Buzzfeed to get revenge for being exposed as a lousy reporter at the International Conference On Men's Issues:

Serwer made a complete ass of himself back in June, and having been exposed as a hack, has spent 6 months digging into Paul's past--and, fascinatingly, did not interview Paul at all or ask him anything about any of this until just last night, hours before running this hit piece, and gave him almost none of the one-sided "details" in this piece, which Paul will now have to either respond to publicly by airing dirty laundry, or just let stand as the lopsided story it is. Lose/lose: be seen as attacking his ex- and his daughter, or just letting this bullshit go unanswered. I can see the scrawny, angry Serwer laughing in glee now.

You don't need to think very hard to realize this is what it is: a hit piece by an agenda-driven "journalist."

Here's the response I'm going to post every time I see this article brought up:

Supposing it is all true and an accurate account, how does it matter?

Supposing it is biased, twisted to show Paul Elam in the worst possible light, is that any surprise?

What really counts are the issues that face men and boys, and the way they tend to be misrepresented and sidelined. I don't doubt that Paul Elam has feet of clay like most of us, if you look at any political or lobbying movement you will find strong personalities with obvious faults. It would be ironic if some of what the article says is accurate, but I feel it is pretty much none of my business, I'm not looking for a religious leader, a father figure or a glowing example of manly perfection, and I don't trust the motives of the writer and publishers of this piece.

Whether or not you support AVFM, let's not take our eye off the ball.

Looks like they found some embittered family members who would be willing to share some inside dirt on Elam; whether their statements are true or not.

The writers of the article are anti-MRAs, and I imagine their goal was to cause disunity within the movement while giving feminists more ammo to discredit the movement.

I'm surprised this type of article hasn't come out sooner. It's just an attempt at character assassination, typical low ball political slimebaggery.

Feminists love to sling mud. Do they really think this totally invalidates all criticisms of their hateful ideology? Our professor claims Dr. Hoff-Sommers has been totally debunked because some minor errors she found in some of her work. Dr. Warren Farrell is dismissed as a rape apologist because of some statement he is alleged to have said in the 70's. A statement that didn't matter when he was a feminist.

Numerous feminist leaders have been caught in lies, bigotry, sexual abuse and professional dishonesty. Look at Simone de Beauvoir or Andrea Dworkin. But feminists feel they can throw then call foul when they get hit.

Look, this whole thing is ridiculous.

a) Feminists often get involved in advocacy through events that happen in their own lives. Having a personal connection to something often results in a passion for issues surrounding that something. That is not a uniquely men's rights phenomenon, assuming it is true.

b) The people who work for the Susan B Komen foundation can make significant amounts of money, often with VOLUNTEERS doing work for them. Massachusetts spent $24M on the domestic violence industry in 1999. Assuming similar amounts spent by all the states, not including donations from non-government sources and the industry has funding of more than $1B/year. People whose job it is to do advocacy, to help others, to speak on their behalf, to lobby, etc... They deserve to be paid for their work. All of these things don't happen for free.

c) No one has ever claimed that Elam is a saint. Attacking his character doesn't undermine any arguments that he has made with which you agree. Don't get distracted by this kind of personal attack shit. Arguments either have merit or they don't. Focus on that.
