With all the talk of sexual assault in popular culture lately, why has nobody reenforced the idea that people should only have sex with those they trust?

Amen, brother.

Gay guy here who used to think traditional religion and its restrictive morality (which is all about "sex with somebody you trust" because of community approval of the relationship) was authoritarian bs. But now that I see what the world has become, I have to grudgingly admit that traditional religion results in better social outcomes.

It's almost as if a certain set of social mores is selected for in an evolutionary sense.

In case you hadn't noticed, recently the conversation has begun to assume that any perceptions, actions, or responsibility taken for one's own safety is an undue burden. Discussing ways a person can help themselves is called "victim-blaming".

Evaluating sexual partners on the basis of trustworthiness is a step one could take to protect oneself, hence is taboo according to the philosophy of "victim-blaming".

Feminism is all about female hypoagency -- the inability to be responsible for their choices.

Any action women could take to protect themselves has been labeled, "victim blaming." Any suggestion of such an action is met with a chorus of, "just tell men not to rape!"

It's malarkey, and the burglar/door lock analogy destroys that argument.

Well, we don't tell women that they should only have sex with people they trust because feminism thinks that having to employ judgement and take responsibility for choices is too great a burden for women to bear.

We don't tell men that they should only have sex with people they trust because they people they have sex with usually aren't the problem; the problem is widespread discrimination against men robbing them of due process, reproductive rights, and dignity.

We don't tell adults that they should only have sex with people they trust because how adults choose their sex partners is actually none of our business.

Good question, and it goes both ways. On the posts related to false rape allegations, suggesting you should take some time to get to know someone before having sex is not a popular position. Despite the obvious fact that a drunken hook-up with a stranger is much more risky for a false rape allegation than someone you know well.

because there is a movement to stop people framing the issue along the lines of well women get themselves raped because they didn't or did do x, y z.

See how you are assuming that the issue is people making bad decisions and they should be taught to make better decisions?

They are trying to re frame to rapists are the issue.
