Yes, your social status will drop.....if you move to the small ass Texas town fucking is done almost entirely by social status within the community and that is dependent on your family and long establish social clichés...

And you had better have massive game on your weekend trips into Houston because you are going to have to be smashing entirely at the girl's place because none of them are going to want to jump in a car\Uber for an hour long trek into the backwaters of Texas.

And thirdly, Texas is a little different but not that much different than other small southern towns which are the bizarro land of self-improvement....most of the chicks are not going to give a shit about your drive or style or education\career and it will take a bit to come to terms with having local hotties diss you for the local shrub who does nothing but landscaping and wears clothing bought at the local hardware store but he has been in the community for decades and is part of the local bro scene. They will always choose the local dude regardless of how many degrees and potentials you throw out on the table.

Plus don't believe the hype about them wanting something exotic...most of the chicks are way, way too conservative for that and often are fucking the guys for social standing more than actual outright attraction...everything is done thru a filter of how the small town chick will be impacted in her social standing in that community among friends, family and often church.

I would choose living closer to Houston and take the commute in a heartbeat. It doesn’t have to be mindless- this is the age of audiobooks dude. You could be expanding your knowledge or learning a new language while driving.

A town of less than 4K will have absolutely nothing to offer you except more space in your house/apartment, which will just feel more empty since you will be alone there 99% of the time.

I would be very hesitant to give up your currently awesome-as-fuck lifestyle in exchange for a more convenient commute. I doubt you’ll be getting very many of those college girls to come back to your place when it’s an hour drive.

I too live about an hour from one of the other major metro areas in Texas and love it with a few caveats.

First, you need to understand that in small towns people don't want to make friends. They've lived there their whole lives and have known everyone they know since grade school. You will always be an outsider for this reason.

Second, no one from the big city wants to come to your little town so expect to do 100% of the traveling, 100% of the time.

Third, people will be significantly different in the small town. They're much more conservative, less open, and generally less attractive than big city people. They're also less likely to give a shit about your engineering job (former engineer here) and all of than than city people. I lived and worked all over the world for a few years out of college and in at bars and social events in, say Dallas, people find this interesting and I get a lot of status. But where I live now? People at my local bar don't give a fuck and couldn't show you major western European countries on a map.
