I needed to amend my marriage separation agreement. The lawyer who mediated my amicable separation charges $350 an hour, and she was also going to send me through a third party firm that deals with QDRO. They were going to charge me over $1200 (I had too many old 401k due to job change). Instead of doing all that, I used my county's family law self-service center which had an online chat with a real person. I was able to get my marriage separation agreement amended on my own by talking to the online helper, which didn't cost anything. Total cost was just $20 to file the stipulation & order with the court clerk, and I've found a way to not do a QDRO (by rolling over 401ks of companies I don't work at anymore into IRA, splitting IRA doesn't require QDRO).

It's extremely hard to get good information, help, and kindness during this period of our struggle, the online chat helper was god-sent. So if you guys run into basic logistics and procedural issues, and you'd like a second opinion (instead of your lawyer since they just want to bill bill bill), check to see if your county court has self-service family law facilitators to answer logistics and procedural questions. It helped me a lot.
