I am a man in my 30s in my first marriage. Almost two weeks ago my wife (who has threatened divorce with every argument since the first week of our marriage a little over a year and a half ago) picked up divorce papers. We are different religious denominations, different cultures, and she is older than me (not too much but enough to where she's probably a cougar).

No adultery is present whatsoever and our sex is great - but we argue over religion, gender roles (she is more traditional yet ironically matriarchal due to her culture), parenting (my child from a previous relationship), criticizes me, belittles me, and I am continually compared to her previous husband (who passed away and was significantly older), and all these other male figures (of her own family/cultural/ethnic group) and she has called me "not a real man". A couple times she threw things at me and once hit me. I just generally have been depressed/anxious the entire marriage. She was my best friend prior to our marriage (but could not keep our hands off each other) and we do a lot of traveling, so it's fun - just we argue bad when we fight.

I have tried decently hard to stick with it, however, after her actually bringing the papers into our house and telling her family about it, I have significantly lost desire to keep this going. I have been having this surge of masculine energy / freedom.

The house is in my name, none of our money is together, and she did not even change her last name when we married. She makes more money than me and has properties outside of our country. She was having me fill the paperwork out but I have been reluctant since my religious faith is really against divorce, and I feel like a hypocrite. If I was a secular man I would have filed divorce myself a while ago.

We just had sex a bit ago, and she suggested she was going to rip the papers up - I told her I do not know. I just simply am sick of being disrespected and micromanaged and I feel like I made a mistake I marrying her.

What should I do?
