Marriage only makes sense in cultures where any of these are true:

One sex is genuinely disadvantaged by law and/or culture -- I mean to the point where that sex is virtually guaranteed to live in poverty, I don't mean 'pay seven percent off the other sex's pay on average' -- and marriage is the only means for that sex to gain the advantage of the other's lifestyle. (Such conditions are terrible and I'd never wish for anyone to go back to them).
Sexual relations outside of marriage are frowned upon so badly that everyone will marginalize those who engage in them, effectively excluding them from 'polite' society until they exhibit sufficient penance.
Marriage is considered a sacred and equal partnership wherein provable violation of that partnership entitles the non-violator to exercise a reasonable penalty against the violator -- i.e. 'you cheat, you're entitled to nothing but your sole separate property' and other such clauses.
