As someone who regrets how I’ve treated my wife, I can tell you this.

I didn’t see that how I was treating her was hurting her. I didn’t realize that how I argued by being defensive and dimissive was pushing her away.
I think that I was so caught up in trying to be right that I didn’t listen to her when she was telling me she was hurting.
Now I’m at a point where my marriage is hanging by a thread. I’m doing my best to change and make up for it. Just hoping it’s not too late.
It’s entirely possible that he didn’t see how his actions where coming across

I regret marriage, not divorce.

It could be that he legitimately regrets how he treated you. It also could be that he knows you'll never take any accountability for your own part in the failure of the marriage, so a full "mea culpa" is the best way to get you to move on.

I know I regret it, more so how I handled it and myself. I blame myself a lot still, but needed it to happen I guess to get where I am now.

How long ago was the divorce and when did he share his regrets? Seems like he may have taken a good step to see his role in what probably led to the divorce, and he regrets his actions and treatment of you. But, that may not mean he wants to try again or to get back together. It could just be him accepting that he could have and should have done things differently.

What do you mean when you’re asking how men process divorce? I’m not clear on what you’re looking for in that. Can you expound on the question?

Oh I regret it. But more in the sense that I regret how it happened, not that it happened. Truth be told I love my ex wife more than words can express. But we both admit that the last 5 years of us were not great, we still cared about one another deeply, but the relationship itself was done.

What I regret was not trying to save it/fix it sooner, whether that would have been making her attended recovery adjacent meetings while I was in AA or idk.

I think if most dudes sat themselves down and had a real conversation with themselves, very few would be able to say they don't have some sort of regret.

I’ve been ruminating about this myself. When my ex-wife first left me I was angry, was sure there was another man and felt financially gouged on the way out. However, after thinking about it a bit it occurred to me that maybe I was the problem. I likely neglected her, we argued about money a lot when I probably shouldn’t have, I stressed about my child from a previous marriage and I got so locked into the financial grind that I probably didn’t have the cycles to respond to her needs. Now, while I’m definitely in a better place, I miss her and her cat terribly. I regret it all but what’s done is done and I would not share this with her. I wish you the best and hope things work out for you.

Honestly you may as well ask “how do people in general handle divorce” because absolutely everyone handles it differently and it’s a different situation for everyone.

If I had to guess, they told you that because they wanted to tell you that. If you communicate with this person, you could always ask them why they said that and what specifically they meant.

As the answer to your other question, have I personally regretted my own divorce? No. No I have not. I was in a dangerous situation that was only going to become worse and cause me to stand to lose more.
