You just do it. Without judgement or emotion. Sit down. Make sure no distractions, be direct and brief. If she has questions (likley) answer them calmly and without blame. Understand that there is no possibility of you being the good guy here. She's going to (now or later) blame you, yell, please, beg, retaliate, lie, etc. Point is you don't know and need to move to not caring.

You are choosing to terminate the relationship. You have to move to she is no longer your concern. That's really hard. I am only separated but I have / had so much love and caring for my STBX. I don't want to hurt her or for her to suffer.

Mind you she has burnt through all that worry, guilt and caring now :) Is asking for huge sun's of money, claims she can't work, I was abusive, etc. And since she was a stay at home house wife with no kids and I worked a ton extra, that's also going to bite me in the ass.

Point is. If you are choosing to terminate then just do so with composure and be direct. There are no happy endings here...

My brother is married to a woman that can be a very difficult person. She has caused strife within our family that would not have existed otherwise. She made my caring, generous, and almost too-much-to-believe-she-could-be-so sweet mother cry. One time he said to me that sometimes he has to wake up in the morning and make himself love her. I have so much respect for him for that. I'm absolutely certain that his kids are better off that he does that. He also finds joy and contentment with her even though she can be very difficult, as every single person can. Even my mother is grateful for her and his commitment to her.
