Question about Child Support/Alimony

Do you think your kids will say they prefer to live with her or with you? Who will end up being the primary parent/caregiver?

Not sure if they will say. I hate to even think of them having to worry about that. God, this sucks!

They are 12 and 10.

Missouris is a no fault state which means assets are usually divided 50/50 regardless of the reason for the divorce.

It does not appear if you’d owe much child support (caveat - unsure how the special needs plays into this) even if she is the custodial parent. If you are the custodial parent she may well owe you child support. If she gets a job paying as well as your you should not owe any alimony. If she makes more than you she may owe you child support.

It really behooves you to document everything and see a lawyer ASAP. You don’t have to file until you’re ready but a good lawyer can help you make sure your children are provided for appropriately.

Can't help you as far as being Missouri specific but get ready to lose half your income friend. It going to suck and I'm in almost the same boat. Get her back to work before you even hint at being serious about divorce if you can handle the wait.

And strong word of caution - anyone on a joint account can withdraw every god damn penny and leave the other with nothing. No questions asked. Don't ask how I know. Be warned. I wish that tidbit were stickied to the top.

Baller move

Have her go back to work. Tell her she’s done a wonderful job being the primary caregiver for the first 10 years of their life. Tell her you really want to be an involved SAHD and besides...she can make more money than you.

Have her get a better paying job than yours. Quit your job. Stay home with the kids. Then file.

You’ll get child support and alimony and won’t have to work.

Please don’t take this as real advice....it’s just a fantasy

How much salary does she bring in? Many states have a simple (online) calculator to determine child support. Missouri has on - I don’t know how to add links yet but if you google “Missouri Child Support Calculator” and input the data it will give you a rough idea of what you’ll owe.

Sorry but you are fucked.

Put some cash aside and go check some good lawyers and ask what they could do for you in a first interview (free i think in the US).

Then you'll have to pay once you decided the one that will maybe save your life.

Better pay what is necessary than being fucked your whole life.

Might be your best investment in your whole life.

Sorry to hear this. Wishing the best for your family. My husband pays his ex 80K in alimony until he retires and files for a reduction...which the judge may or may not approve based on her mood that day. They were married 25 years. His ex has a masters degree and is an assistant principal at a private school. She can make way more money if she wanted to but doesn't and the courts won't make her. They split everything accumulated during the marriage and he is on the alimony hook forever. I would suggest you make her work more. No more part time nonsense. That will help a lot. Also, can you reduce your income? That would probably help too. Good luck.
