Ask how many staff members will be involved in your matter. I hate seeing so many "reviewed work done by paralegal" or 4 redundant "read email" entries on my invoices.

Gosh, there’s so many different hypotheticals.

You have kids? Bring stuff relevant about them. Costs and specific child needs.

House and cars? It’d be good to know how much they’re worth and how much you have paid into them together. Also, you need to find out what state specific laws apply here. What’s in both of y’all’s names? And does that even matter in your state? For some it all becomes community property after the marriage date.

Do you even need a lawyer? Cheapest and best option is to negotiate amicably. If that’s not an option, maybe bring some proof of that. Text messages etc.

Consults are often free. A lawyer will probably be in the $250 - $500 / hr range. Definitely not cheap. They usually work open ended from a coffer called a retainer. My family lawyer fees added up to about $19k for the lawyer alone.

There are too many questions which need context and location to answer. But in general, the big ticket items are child support, alimony, the house, savings, debt, and "stuff." Ask questions like "What's the most likely outcome?" "Where should I live during separation?" "What do I do if my credit score drops?" Ask challenging questions and see who answers the best.

If the lawyer didn't tell you want to bring find a new lawyer. But you probably don't need anything. My first meeting was to interview them and see if I liked them. When I picked one and was ready the meet was for them to tell me everything I need to do and get the retainer paid.
