As ever feminists fail to grasp nuance. Shakespeare was a genius at giving different characters different motivations which they go on to articulate at length. This means a character will say things because it’s what they’d say at that moment in that fiction, not what Shakespeare is trying to convey… FFS…

When Hamlet tells Ophelia to “get thee to a nunnery” rather than be a “breeder of sinners,” this is not Shakespeare condemning all men and advocating to women to shun men through religious celibacy. This was a character in a particular set of circumstances reacting as such. Hamlet was responding flippantly to Ophelia’s acquiescence to others who were encouraging her to spurn the genuine affection the two had for each other. He feels for her given her own predicament and somewhat frustratedly gives her “advice” he doesn’t himself believe. After all he’s the same character who elsewhere states, “Frailty, thy name is woman…” because again he’s responding to other circumstances… But a feminist would quote the latter to now say Shakespeare was a misogynist… Just tiresomely obtuse…

The “sigh no more” song reference was part of Shakespeare’s “Much Ado about Nothing”- an apt title regarding feminist ragebaiting- using a fictionally popularized song (ie, popular only in that story) about cynically normalized male infidelity sung as a contrast to a story in which a man very much wanted a monogamous relationship w a woman. Among other characters and themes in the context of a complex plot that a feminist will unintentionally ironically overlook in a work of 17th Century high-brow comedy… After all it’s a story w a theme of cynicism v love… and a feminist will always select the former… despite Shakespeare selecting the latter in the play itself…

Also Shakespeare wrote, “It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.” So clearly Shakespeare was a harsh critic of his own work, but w that description he nailed feminist “theory” pretty well.
