That's the thing the article is demonstrating though: a lot of low status men are sold the mythology that if they just work harder, make more money, get stronger, etc. then they'll be able to enter the ranks of the high status men.

Problem is, in that kind of hierarchical system of evaluating men, high status men can only be high status if there's a lot of low-status men to compare themselves to. Further, low status men who are acquiring more wealth or strength or influence are therefore becoming a threat to those men who are already high status. Thus, war provides a convenient means by which the existing high status men can preemptively remove a bunch of rivals who might come from below.

And the whole mythologizing about war men are bombarded with encourages those most likely to want to challenge high status men to be the first in recruitment line. They're sold ideas that they'll demonstrate their manly bonafides on the battlefield and return wreathed in glory, having established themselves as high status men. In truth, a lot of them won't come back at all, and those men who've already got absurdly high status through family connections or wealth will be able to avoid taking the same risks and will often be further entrenched in their status afterward.

And even just with the economic stuff, the admonishments to work hard, make as much money as they can, put the development of their personal lives on hold for a decade or two... often just ends up with them laboring like hell to make money for someone more powerful than them. Afterward, they find themselves late to the dating scene, constrained in their options, and frustrated wondering why the wealth they have been able to horde for themselves doesn't seem to translate into more dating success. They got played by the men who were richer than them, who are probably on their second or third trophy wife. And if they really got played, those rich men will have gotten them blaming women for it instead of the system of patriarchy itself that they sit atop.

I'd say you're off to a good start.

Here's the thing, when those "high status" men mock you for failing to live up to arbitrary standards they set or for acting "feminist" in their eyes, they're trying to goad you back into that same system that props them up at your expense. They use that mockery as a tool to whip "low status" men back into line, working toward their ends on the vague promise they might one day elevate you to their ranks.

But if you say, "No, screw you and your hollow B.S. I'm going to go find my own happiness and I get to set the terms of what that means for me, not you." That pisses them off like nothing else, because you're explicitly saying that you won't let them control you. They hate that, because every man who doesn't bow to the conformist pressures they demand makes their power over other men weaker.

So yeah, I'd say even the disengagement you're doing is already pushing back against that, even if you think yourself passive. If holding a decent paying easy job, playing video games, and watching movies makes you happy, well, that's just more power you're reclaiming for yourself.
