Stereotypical masculinity means not being afraid of anything though, so it's a contradiction in itself.

I think the answer you are asking for is manyfold and differs depending on the individual.

For some of them, it is a matter of tradition, military type traditional hegemonic masculinity, where weakness can get you killed. It isn’t that much of an useful stance anymore, but tradition acts as a beacon in a sea of uncertainty and those guys are simps for that. Along the same line, some are just following a trend, acting like their friends, submitting to the local social pressure, in fact in some covert way being agreeable.

For some other, it is a philosophical « amoral » kind of stance, in which they can’t make sense of pro-social behaviour in a materialistic, ultimately individualistic, reward driven world. It stems from ideas like essential egoism and behavioural psychology reward theory, which states that any human decision can be reduced to a computation of seeking reward and avoiding punishment. Some of them really feel like that, tho they usually are the most quiet about it. Those are your actual sociopathic/narcissistic/Machiavellian types. But some others just wish they were like that, so they could sort out their conflicted ambitions and mixed feeling and get a simple definitive answer.

For some others, I’m sure it is a business move to make other people feel miserable, isolate them and sell them some snake oil. Men face very specific mental health risks in our society, and nudging them toward aggressiveness, isolation, antagonism and ultimately self-mental mutilation may be beneficial to some guru’s bottom line.

Of course this isn’t an exhaustive list, just the first few things that came to my mind. I’m sure other people will find other explanations.

For some, it's because they were trained into compliance by one or both of their parents, and were given the rude awakening that "being a good boy" does not automatically get you what you want in society.

Because unfortunately a lot of people still see men acting anything outside of the 1950s variant as weak.

Even I have been guilty of it but it's definitely still here despite us being more Progressive.

Does the reason why men still try so hard to compete and seemed like the best and that is because whether it be biological or sociological, we are expected to be the best or at least try otherwise we're not real men

I can see where the red pill men are coming from because I have had girls who've been turned off by me just being myself which is nice or kind but they saw it as weakness or me being fake.

I think they're trying to get rid of the competition. Why the hell would I choose a misogynist when I have the option of a genuinely good and respectful guy?

If they can shame more men for being "simps" or convince them women like arseholes, then there will be less good guys for us to choose from. And more of us would have to settle.
