I loosely know a early 20s guy who I strongly suspect is into TRP; he's a redditor and definitely into PUA, so it makes sense to me that it would be TRP he is involved with. I have an idea of some of the TRP techniques and recognise him doing them (he doesn't know I reddit), but idk how much overlap there is between TRP and other PUA stuff. So it could be some other PUA community.

I was wondering if people here would share the moment they realised they were too far into TRP, or that it wasn't working for them, and needed to get out. Was there any particular intervention or set of circumstances that brought that realisation about?

[further gab about TRPer associate below]

I actually have a longstanding association with his mother and mostly the reason I know this about him is because he got drunk several years ago, started trying to hit on me, and followed that up with a very long spiel about how 'they' were giving him all this advice, like 'they' were telling him to dress better (and tbf, he is), but that it wasn't working.

I will fully admit I shut him down more bluntly than I could have done, I was just surprised because he's quite a bit younger than me and completely did not see him in a sexual manner at all (was his babysitter a couple of times) and was surprised he saw me that way. I've always called his mother 'aunty', etc.

Anyway, I do feel sympathy for him, but each time I see him and realise he's slightly further along tbh it gets less and less. Even if he regrets it and quits now, having seen him go this far, I don't know if I would still want to be around him after. I'm really not sure.

A couple of years before the above, he went through a traumatic experience that likely would have impacted his sense of masculinity severely (refused therapy), his parents divorced when he was young and he apparently still has a chip on his shoulder about this?, he may or may not have been bullied at school (asked mother at the time, she said he was very happy but I knew that the school had a severe bullying culture), and he is clearly resenting that he isn't having success with women at uni (where he is now).

He was always very quiet and introverted, I didn't mind spending time with him and assumed he would come out of his shell eventually. He has now, but has developed what I imagine is the stereotypical TRP personality; lifting, very racist, sexist jokes, etc. The last time I saw him was for a couple of hours and I ended up just avoiding eye contact with him after the beginning because he kept doing what must have been an 'amused mastery' expression at me.

I spoke to his mother the other day; about 3 months ago he got involved with a girl who we both felt was bad news, but he wouldn't listen to her and apparently she's just left him for someone else. He accidentally revealed to his mother that he spent several thousand pounds of his savings during that period.

I can't imagine that experience will move him away from TRP any time soon, but I'm wondering what might.

I've just been reading through here, and I agree with someone who has said that getting further into TRP actually lessens your ability to recognise manipulative people. It was just really obvious to me, even through a thirdhand account over the phone, that this girl was bad news.
